Questions & Answers

Is it possible to use this to darken the hair on my face?

I see no reason why it couldn't be done on a miniature or resin piece. However, if you're referring to your own facial hair, I'd say no.

Is it possible to sand or wet sand this product?

Yes. There are some conditions attached. You can if you're using it on a porous surface like wood, mdf, or something similar. Instead of smoothing the surface, it's more likely that you'll just remove all of the primer when using it on models, miniatures, and the like. Because Vallejo primer isn't self-etching, adhesion isn't nearly as good as rattle can spray paint, especially on metal, and you'll be disappointed if you try to sand it.

Is it necessary to thin this before applying it with an airbrush?

It comes out of the bottle thin enough to use right away. If you want really thin layers, you can thin it out a little, but it's not necessary.

How long does this airbrushed product have to dry before it can be top-coated? Thank you very much! ?

It will only take 2 minutes if you apply it thickly. Drying time is 3 minutes. Also, before using it in an airbrush, it's best to dilute it with thinner.

Stop inhaling spray paint, because this is an excellent primer
5/5

I've been trying to stay away from spray can primers for my miniature painting because I've heard they're bad for your health, and I've tried a few different alternatives. I was very pleased with this Vallejo black primer, which came in a small 1oz/30ml bottle. I was about half-way through my journey when I came across this. I was convinced after finishing it, so I ordered a large 200ml bottle. br>It takes a little more effort because I'm brushing it on rather than spray painting it, but it's not bad. I can do it right here at my desk, which is a huge plus for me because I've never been able to find a good spot for spray paint. Using an over-the-shoulder camera, make a few quick passes. After a night's wait, it's time to move on to the next step.

I tried this paint and decided it was not for me
3/5

I've tried airbrushing with this paint, and I've spent the last few days figuring out the best combination of air pressure, thinning, and distance. I didn't dilute this surface primer and it worked for a while before failing. Before I could find a large glob of paint blocking the flow of paint through the gun, I had to completely disassemble it. I was using an airbrush with a pot on it, and I was able to spray water through the gun, but when I added undiluted paint, there was no paint flow at all. I began to add airbrush flow improver and continued to do so until the primer flowed and I was well beyond the 1v1 paint mix. With little change in paint flow, I increased and decreased the flow pressure between 18 and 30 psi. Painting with a bottle dangling from an airbrush wasn't ideal because you needed more paint than was required to get the paint to spray. br>I'm not sure if it's because the primer has been sitting for a while or what, but it seems a little thick. I bought some Vallejo middle stone, which was so thick it wouldn't even come out of the bottle. I was probably using four parts thinner to one part paint to get it to a sprayable consistency. br>I believe I'll have to look for a different paint manufacturer. I've never had an issue with Humbrol paints before, and I've never had one with this one. Once you get the ratios right, it covers nicely; I'm just going to try something I can actually put in the airbrush and spray, perhaps with a little thinner added. While it covers well and looks good on what I'm painting, it takes more time and effort than I want to put in every time I try to paint. It's a pain to change colors. For my models, I'll be looking for a new paint brand.

It's extremely thin and smooth
5/5

This is the primer to get. I usually use lacquer paint, so this is the first time I've used an acrylic primer. So far, I've been very impressed! I spray two light coats at 18 psi with one drop of flow improver, and the finished product is super thin and smooth. In fact, it's so smooth that I can't even feel the paint on primed miniatures' surfaces. br>br>I honestly can't say enough good things about this product. You have to give it a shot to see how good it really is. br>br>Creative+ paraphrase: Because this is an acrylic, it won't stick to plastic as well as a lacquer primer, so I wouldn't use it on moving parts like Gunpla joints. For static models, it's still a great option.

I live in a place where the temperature and humidity are extremely high
4/5

I live in an area where the temperature and humidity are not conducive to spray primer use. By allowing me to prime inside my home, this product allows me to avoid that issue. Although the instructions say to use an airbrush to apply this primer, I've had no trouble using a regular paintbrush to do so.

Exactly what I had hoped for
5/5

As I begin to dabble in miniature painting, I was looking for a good primer. Vallejo has a lot of good reviews, so that was my first choice. br>It's recommended to airbrush it on, and I'm sure it saves time and makes for a smooth application, but I didn't have one at the time I brushed it on. Now, I had to remove the horrible primer I tried first, so I was expecting mixed results. However, the Vallejo primer went on smoothly and easily, has a great finish, and I can't even see brush marks (the picture doesn't do it justice, but I can't stress how smooth it is). br>br>I give it a ten out of ten and highly recommend it.

Primer for airbrushing is my personal favorite
5/5

It's all very good. I'm aware that this and the Badger situation are at odds. Both work fine, and I've had no issues with either. Some say it doesn't stick to the model or peels away - Perhaps they should clean their models first, or perhaps they are spraying the paint incorrectly. I understand that, as with any primer or paint, time or cold storage is not your friend - Poorly stored primers, without a doubt, would cause problems. But that hasn't happened to me yet - 1000 models later, and the company is still going strong.

For miniature painting, this is the best primer
5/5

This item is completely insane. I'm not one to write glowing reviews, but this is the best painting purchase I've ever made. I've used rattlecans in a variety of applications, from basic primer to game workshop to army painter, and I've never had a more pleasant experience than with this one. With just a few drops in an airbrush, you'll have a beautiful and even matte black canvas to work with. br>br>What's even crazier is that, despite being designed for airbrushing, it works perfectly well when applied with a brush. It's almost magical how well it comes out, and it actually saves you money on paint! br>br>I have a large brush that I use for priming when I don't have access to an airbrush. With Vallejo Surface Primer, a drop of black on a wet palette is enough to cover an entire miniature; what's even more amazing is how thin it comes out; it never mucks up details or crevices, even when I think I used too much on a brush. It has a noob-like feel to it. primer for proofreading I can't say enough good things about it. I'd never have a problem painting again if every paint I bought came out as cleanly and smoothly as this primer. br>br>Give it a shot; you won't be sorry.

Excellent for spraying or brushing
5/5

On my miniatures, I sometimes prefer a nice, thinly brushed on coat of primer to spray-on primer. For both, this primer is ideal. The paint has a nice matte finish and applies smoothly without needing to be thinned, resulting in a well-prepared painting surface. I haven't had any issues with adhesion, and it dries quickly, which is a plus in my book. You get a lot for your money, and I really like it.
