Questions & Answers

Is it possible for this lock to freeze?

With the plastic casing and keyhole cover, they're probably more resistant to freezing than most, and I've never had an issue with either of mine freezing up while securing my ladder and patio furniture outside for more than five years.

Is this lock dependable in cold, wet, or snowy conditions?

YES, YES, YES, yes, yes, yes, yes In September, I got this lock. 2019 Every day since then, it has been exposed to cold, wet, and snowy weather in upstate NY. It's a fantastic security device!

Is it a paint, a plastic sheath, or shrink tubing that this yellow body is made of? Is it securely fastened to the metal beneath it?

Plastic is used to make the yellow and black parts. The only thing that moves is the keyhole flap; everything else is very securely fastened, though I'm not sure how. Mine has been used outdoors for at least 7 years and is still in good condition.

I'm looking for four of these locks, all with the same key. Is it possible to accomplish this?

If you go to a locksmith or do it yourself, it is possible. It is possible to take out the core.

A Lockpicker's View: As someone who enjoys picking locks, I can confidently state that this is the only good Master lock ever made
5/5

Weather-resistant ball bearings with a dead core and security pins. This is the lock to get if you want a good, secure lock at a reasonable price. Other Master locks are almost universally bad, and I can crack any of them in a matter of seconds. This one would take a long time to complete, but it is highly recommended!.

I made it through a winter in Alaska
5/5

I purchased this lock for my shed over a year ago and am now ordering another for my gate. The lock remained as good as new throughout the winter. The key hole is securely covered by the cap, which snaps into place. It appears to keep moisture out quite well.

If the weather is an issue, this is the best option
5/5

It's a good idea to do some research before purchasing an outdoor padlock that will be exposed to the elements, especially if any water that gets into the lock will freeze and make it impossible to open, at least until you locate your extension cords and hairdryer. br>br>The problems are as follows:
- How is water kept out by the lock's design?
- What is the thickness of the shank? (if it's too wide, it won't fit through a narrower existing hasp)br>- Other standard lock questions, such as resistance to bolt cutters, etc. br>br>This lock has a thick plastic drape on top, but water can still get in where the shank slides, so I used vaseline to help even more. The only way to find out is to wait. I used a small amount of vaseline because I know that too much lubrication attracts dust and dirt, which clogs up the mechanism over time. A plastic cover that snaps into the keyhole is also included on the bottom. It's swivels and is attached to the lock's bottom. It's difficult to get it out once it's fully inserted into the keyhole, and you'll need something like a flat screwdriver blade to jimmy it loose - Fingernails, at least mine, aren't going to cut it. As a result, be ready for it. br>br>This has a shank thickness of just under 5/16" or 8mm, according to my measurements. It was a huge relief when it fit into my existing hasp's metal loop, or staple. On the shanks of some of the other locks I saw, there were coatings that would have prevented this. The shank on this lock is a little thicker than the one on my previous, rusted lock, but not by much. Despite the bright yellow color of the body, which in my neighborhood is like waving a red flag to malicious vandals, this is the only lock I've found that meets my needs, so I bought it. ("Oh, lookie, she thinks she's locked the door to her barn. ") We're going to prove it to her. ") I fixed it, however, by wrapping black electrical tape around the yellow body with care. In our hot/cold climate, that won't last forever, but it's easy to replace. br>br>Not only is the lock durable and water resistant, but the keys are far more substantial than those found in typical padlocks. It's a big lock. When I'm locked, I'm 1 7/8" wide and 3 1/2" long, and I'm quite heavy. I haven't put it on a scale, but it must weigh at least a pound.

JUNK
3/5

In October 2016, I bought the Master Lock 911DPF padlock. It was attached to a chain on my electric bicycle and was used twice. After lubricating the cylinder, I opened the lock, which worked perfectly today. After that, I put it on another bike, and the cylinder no longer accepts the key. The key will travel about a quarter of the way and then come to a halt. Any Master Lock has lost my trust. I'm fortunate that I was at home and not out in town, where I would have had to leave the bike for someone to steal. I guess it was a waste of $21 with Master Lock; now I just have to figure out how to remove the lock and chain from the bike so I can ride it. I despise the idea of having to purchase a power grinder to get rid of it. Thank you so much, Master Lock!.

This is a personal favorite
5/5

In terms of safety, This is a very reliable lock. It is difficult to shim. Weatherproof casing helps to keep it in better condition, and the lock cover keeps moisture out. br>br>From the standpoint of a lockpicker, this is a fantastic lock to learn on. It's fairly simple once you figure out the trick, but if you're looking for a new challenge, the lock is fun to pick, dismantle, and add your own security pins.

For a masterlock, it's not bad
4/5

It's disappointing to see a 50 mm padlock with an 8 mm shackle, considering everything Masterlock did right. br>br>Nice weatherproofing (apart from the color), ball bearing shackle, 4 spooled and 1 serrated driver pins, rekeyable core. br>br>While the core is resistant to raking and bumping, anyone with single pin lock picking experience will be able to pick this lock in under 30 seconds. Many novice pickers may not notice the lock has been picked because of the core tension, and because the hasp will not pop open on its own, it does a good job of thwarting inexperienced pickers. Because of the recessed nature of the lock, tensioning the top of the keyway is difficult, and the bottom of the keyway can bind the core. Many tension wrenches, especially those that aren't as expensive, may bend due to the core tension. In general, they did a decent job for a masterlock.

THE WORST LOCK I'VE EVER HAD
3/5

This lock is VERY heavy, and it does not open when the key is turned. You must PULL it open,br>The key works sometimes and doesn't always,br>This lock is VERY easy to pick, and I'm not a locksmith,br>All they did was cover this horrible lock with some rubberized cover to call it waterproof, and get you for $20 bucks. br>I've been using American Brand locks on my fences and other outdoor structures for DECADES and they've never froze up and don't weigh a ton. However, American-made locks are no longer as popular as they once were. They are no longer owned by the same company and are no longer the same. I wish I knew which padlock to use for outdoor use that is also difficult to pick.

This is a fantastic lock for a tire carrier! This is an excellent lock with excellent craftsmanship
5/5

I use this to secure my jerry cans on the holder on my Tacoma's tire carrier, and the weather proofing appears to be excellent. It has a large full-size key that goes in and out smoothly; there's no jiggling in and ripping it out. It has a rubber exterior that won't scratch the metal carrier or make a noise when it hits it. This is fantastic in every way! It's just that I wish it was black rather than yellow, but that's not a big deal.
