Questions & Answers

Is it possible to use this as a locker system? They are required for the lockers at my son's summer camp. What is the weight of this, and how big is it?

I suppose it depends on the size of your son's locker's latch. My locker at the gym is where I keep mine. It's a fairly substantial lock - incredibly solid It would hurt a lot if I threw it at you.

Is the shackle on this unit over 1" long?

The shackle is only a half-inch long. When fully closed, the shackle measures 7/8 of an inch on the inside.

Those who have purchased in multiples will benefit from this. Do the keys work on locks other than the one that came with it (i.e., are they interchangeable)?

Nope. I brought four of them, each in its own blister pack. As if you went to the hardware store and bought four different sets of locks.

Is this a product from the United States of America?

The location of manufacture is not specified on the lock; I threw the wrapping away. It is, however, an extremely strong lock. Although the key is most likely not solid brass, it serves its purpose.

THIS LOCK SHOULD NOT BE PURCHASED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. br>br>I purchased this lock to improve my lock-picking skills. YESTERDAY I began picking, a new hobby for me. br>br>After a transparent ACRYLIC lock for absolute beginners, this was my first attempt at picking a lock. br>br>I was astounded by how ridiculously, pitifully simple it was to pick this with only rudimentary knowledge and low-tech equipment. tools of high quality After getting the hang of it, it takes me about 5 seconds. It wasn't even suitable for lock-picking practice. br>br> picking! Because it was SO EASY, I got nothing out of it.

Spend $6 on a lock and get one that can secure $6 worth of goods

Master locks are commonly regarded as "security theater" props because they can withstand more physical abuse than most other locks from other companies. However, the moment you use any lockpicking tools on them, they fall apart. br>br>If you're looking for a similarly sized lock that has some actual resistance to picking while remaining inexpensive, grab an Abus. Because of their MUCH higher level of manufacturing tolerances, they actually put up a fight against lockpicking for their size and price. br>br>However, a determined troublemaker will not be deterred by anything this small and in this price range. br>br>I purchased this lock as a "first-level" lock for lockpicking. I was already cracking through this thing in less than a minute on the same day I held lockpicks in my hands for the first time. any low- If it takes that little effort and skill to defeat, brow street babble could open this lock in under a minute. br>br>If you're new to lockpicking, this lock can serve as an introduction to security pins; the security pins used in this lock are a cheaper "lite" version of what you'd find in other locks. This is a great training tool, but it's useless as a security device. br>br>If you want something that won't stick out like a sore thumb, this is the way to go. Be ready to spend a little more money. The Abus 88/40 Plus is available for a little more than $30. This one has a high-quality disc detainer core (picking it requires specialized tools), a hardened steel body, and it can't be shimmed. The lock will most likely be the strongest part of whatever is protecting what you've locked up with that lock.

Poor security; in this price range, there are better options

I bought this lock to practice picking it, and I was surprised at how simple it was to defeat. As a novice lock picker, I can open this lock in less than 5 seconds. br>br>For a small amount more money, there are locks that are many times more secure than these locks. br>br>Here's what I'd recommend in this price range: ABUS Titalium 64TI/50 ABUS Titalium 64TI/50 ABUS Titalium 64TI/50 ABUS Tital.

The same biting as 146D, but a mismatched key opened it
3/5

With a key from another padlock, I was able to open it. For legitimate use, this alone merits a one-star rating. br>br>Full disclosure: I'm using this as a lockpicking practice lock, just like many other reviewers. I mean, I'd be if it weren't for the fact that I'm a woman It's so easy to open that it's useless for *lock picking*. My wife, who had never used a pick or seen the inside of a lock before, opened it in under ten seconds. Overall, the clamshell packaging proves to be a more formidable barrier, earning 1 star for non-compliance. use that is legal. Avoid!.

I purchased this as part of a lock picking progression set and found it to be mediocre
3/5

It has a spool pin, which I hoped would make it a little more difficult. Unfortunately, this lock's only drawback is its poor feedback. I picked it up and moved on to the next one in a matter of minutes. br>br>If you're a beginner looking for a basic security lock to pick, you might want to pass on this one. Go to Brinks 162 right away. Instead, use the number 40001. br>br>If you're looking to use this lock to secure something, I'm afraid I don't have much to say except that it's not pick resistant and thus not very secure.

Picking isn't easy, but it's still not ideal
3/5

I'm a beginner picker, and it took me several hours to pick this, and I've only done it twice. It's definitely more difficult to pick than a Chinese clone of the master lock 10D. It's also made with a lot more precision. However, I believe it can be opened instantly with a tool that pushes all of the pins up far enough (I don't have this tool, so I can't test this theory). It also has a flimsy, light feel to it. I'm sure it could be brute-forced quickly with pocket-sized tools, such as handheld bolt cutters or the wrench leverage method.

It's far too simple to choose
3/5

I'm giving this lock two stars because it's extremely insecure, but not one because it serves as a deterrent and is preferable to having no lock at all. br>br>It does a good job of keeping things closed and is a deterrent for the general public, but anyone willing to spend 15 seconds trying to pick it will find it pops open with little effort. Don't buy this lock to secure anything you aren't willing to replace.

It's a good lock for lockpicking practice, but it's a bad lock for security
3/5

This lock was purchased as a beginner lockpicking target; it isn't difficult to open even for a complete novice, but it does have a serrated security pin (which may vary from lock to lock) that assisted me in learning how to feel out the lock. The lock can't be easily raked, at least for my bitting and pins (your mileage may vary), but it can be opened with a comb pick or by simply sticking something through the back of the lock and pulling the shackle mechanism apart. br>br>Basically, this lock is the bare minimum and provides no significant protection against an attacker who has even the most basic understanding of how a lock works. I was undecided about how to rate this because it was perfect for my needs, but I went with one star because my situation is unusual.
