Questions & Answers

Is it possible to rekey it to match the smartkey capability of my Baldwin locks?

Baldwin key blanks MUST be compatible with kwikset smartkey key blanks. You should take your Baldwin key to a local locksmith and have him compare it to a standard kwikset key blank to make sure this is the case. Alternatively, if you know someone who already has a Kwikset smartkey lock installed on their door, simply insert your Baldwin key into the lock. If it's appropriate (i.e. if it's a good fit If your key fits into the lock, you should be good to go.

What is the weather resistance of this padlock? summer heat, wet, cold for a long time? Is it still dependable and capable of rekeying in bad weather?

I live in Alabama, so I can't speak to prolonged freezing, but it has froze a few times without issue and performs admirably in hot and humid conditions. And we have one on a gate that gets direct runoff from the roof (due to the lack of a downspout) and that one has given us a few issues, but each time we have been able to dry it out a little and oil it, it goes back to being perfect; it has never been bad enough that we couldn't get it to work, but it is becoming a little more temperamental, and we know it needs some TLC. I use these locks on my gates, storage units, and crawl space doors and they're fantastic. Our house is also equipped with smartkey locks. They were a good investment.

What is the meaning of mm?

The size of the shackle and the base is 50mm (2 inches).

Does it only work with kwikset copied keys, or does it also work with original keys?

It works with kwickset keys that have been copied as well as original keys.

3/5

(Am I supposed to give 2 stars for a bad product now that Amazon has abandoned 1-star ratings?) Are there any five-star reviews? ) I bought a bunch of these and am disappointed to report that one out of every two of them has failed. Rekeying door locks works fine (but only fine), but padlocks don't. I believe the issues stem solely from shoddy Chinese production. On five of them, the key turned badly (even after rekeying to the same key), and on two of them, it didn't turn at all. One was locking a job box with a covered shackle, which left me stranded and angry that I hadn't replaced it with a regular good padlock at the first sign of trouble. But here's the interesting part: I had no choice but to attack it physically in order to open it. I have no experience or knowledge in this area, so I was surprised to discover that it took 10 seconds for the lock to pop open (I won't go into detail about what I did, but it wasn't anything special).

Worst Lock in the History of Locks
3/5

I bought three of these locks; the first, I followed the instructions to program my key; however, once the lock was closed, no key would work. I tried again with lock 2, this time paying close attention to the instructions. No key works in it now that I've closed the lock. What a blunder this purchase was, I'm not even going to bother with lock 3. You should be ashamed of yourself, Kwikset, for putting out such garbage. The padlock isn't even listed as a product on the Kwikset support page. For 15 minutes, I was on hold waiting for help. NO THANK YOU, I'll buy something else; this is the definition of faulty technology.

To rekey, read the instructions
5/5

I was surprised by how big and heavy the lock was. If you're rekeying the lock to match your house key, make sure you read the instructions first. Rekeying a house lock is not the same as rekeying a car lock. The most important thing to remember is that after inserting the new key, you must lock the padlock before turning it. A warning about locking the lock before inserting the new key is included as well. The lock will become unusable as a result of this, as it will no longer be keyed to the old key and will not have been keyed to the new one.

Problems Recur Due to a Loose Case keying
4/5

It's very easy to miss that the tool and/or new key aren't fully inserted if you aren't aware that the case is moving. Excellent locks that can be rekeyed to match the decor of your home
5/5

These are incredible locks. Ensure that you follow the instructions to the letter. br>1. Insert the key and use the provided key to open the lock.
2. Change the position of the latch so that it is facing away from the keyhole.
3. Depress the button next to the lock with the tool.
4. 5. Remove the key that came with the lock. br> Put your house key in (and make sure you press it all the way down). I made a mistake with the first lock)br>6. Close the lock and remove the key, which should now be rekeyed. br>br>If you're having trouble, try inserting the key you're trying to rekey at various depths- When I messed up (by not making sure the key was in all the way), I discovered mine only worked about 2/3 of the time. Following the steps above, I was able to rekey the lock using that key all the way in.

Non- Right out of the box, functional and lacking parts - I bought two locks from the Amazon warehouse
3/5

I purchased two of these locks from Amazon's warehouse, both of which were in slightly used or damaged packaging. They claim to have been inspected, but this is a lie. The lock's ad does not specify how many keys it comes with, but there is a photograph of the lock with three keys. Ironically, the Amazon customer service representative who helped me return the locks pointed this out to me. I had expected two keys per lock, but as you can see in the photo, one lock only came with one key. And neither lock had a special key-changing tool. To make matters worse, the keys were incompatible with both locks right out of the box. So the nice little sticker that says these have been inspected either means they were inspected by an idiot or they weren't inspected at all. My Amazon warehouse deals success rate is roughly 2015%. Seven out of ten items that are slightly used or have damaged packaging do not work. When I mentioned this to the customer service representative, she insisted on double-checking them. It's impossible when they arrive at this level of non-compliance. operational in terms of missing items, and the keys don't even open the lock to begin with, so there's no way to re-open it. I'm putting the keys in the lock on my house. br>br>Before making a purchase, the helpful customer service representative advised me to read the reviews. And I'd read a few of them. I explained to her in great detail that these locks will never work because the lock has been changed and the original key no longer works, despite the fact that it must work in order to change the key. Plus, even if the key worked, which it doesn't on either lock, you'd still need the special little tool. br>br>I'm all for a bargain, but the Amazon warehouse special deals have a far too high failure rate. For example, I once bought earbuds that had a lot of wax on them. Those were supposed to be checked for quality as well, but they clearly weren't - In this case, the same applies. There's no way anyone checked these locks before affixing those stickers, despite the fact that they falsely claim to have done so. br>br>According to the reviews, some people had trouble changing the key, which could indicate that they didn't follow the instructions properly. However, the reviews that the new key worked for a few times and then stopped working are more concerning. That's not going to work. So I'm going to get a new lock and abandon the idea of having it match the key to my house.
