This lock appealed to me because it is "weatherproof," and I live in upstate New York, where the weather is frequently cold and snowy. br>br>Last week, I installed a lock on my shed. I attempted to open it yesterday morning but was unable to do so because the plastic covering that covers the keyhole would not slide open. The plastic knob on the covering snapped off as I exerted a little more effort. br>br>If you look closely at the photo, you can see ice in the opening on the left side. To melt the ice and open the cover, I needed to go get a hot glass of water. Not the end of the world, though. It still works fine, but given that water was able to get into the bottom of the lock and freeze, I believe the weatherproof claim is a bit of a stretch. If you live somewhere cold, I recommend leaving the cover open.
This appearance appears to be appropriate for outdoor safety. I think it's cool, but it's not very secure; I'm a novice lock picker, and I was able to open it in a few minutes because the keyway is simple and easy to manipulate. I've had a harder time opening locks in the same price range.
I was convinced I'd discovered the ideal lock - boron shackle with a long length and a great cover to keep dust and water out of the keyhole br>br>Unfortunately, the lock jammed about one out of every ten times I tested it, and I tested it over 30 times. I was planning on ordering a replacement, but the shackle diameter was also a few millimeters too large for my gate. br>br>Perhaps mine was a dud, but it's usually a good lock, so try it out a few times before using it outside.
This is far superior to what I anticipated. Over the keyhole, there's a small 'door. ' It's a nice touch to make it water-resistant.
Why are WARMTH and THICKNESS mentioned in a lock review? LOL . So it's cold and rubbery, right? Regardless, for my purposes of keeping people out of a pool area, this lock is adequate at this price point. My dogs would be all over them and alert us if someone tried to mess with it, so there's no need to worry. It appears to be weather resistant, and I like that I can close the keyhole. For my purposes, there are no issues.
The lock is being used to keep workers from opening the gate in the wrong direction. That's exactly what it's for. Other people have said that picking this lock is relatively simple, but that is not an issue for me. I'm pleased with my purchase, particularly because it's longer than a standard padlock.
The lock functions properly, but the bottom cover (which appears to be for waterproofing) appears to break easily and then refuses to close. If moisture enters the lock and freezes, this could be problematic. Fortunately, this is not an issue in my climate and usage of the lock, so it functions perfectly.
This is what I used for my tractor's load lock rack. It lasted all winter without rusting or becoming stuck, so I'd recommend it to others if they need something for the outdoors.
