With a 4" pipe you may not use the backplate. My guess is if at least a quarter inch of your pipe is longer, it might work with a A longer female threaded pipe portion would not pose any installation issues if the manufacturer made it a bit longer. I purchased the American Standard "Williamsburg" bath fixture set from Home Depot some 15 years ago, and this diverter bathtub spout is a replacement [an exact replica, in fact]. The product is better than other similar products About 18 months ago, I replaced my tub spout, and I now find that 90% of the water just flows out of the spigot instead of being diverted to the shower as it should. Using a handle to divert the water is not a requirement of modern plumbing designs. As a result, you will need to reply on a shabby design, like a diverter for a tub spout. My problem may be solved once and for all with this approach. American Standard isn't much more expensive than the ones at the big box hardware stores, but they are superior to those at the local hardware store. When I looked inside the tube, I saw a horizontal washer inserted instead of a plunger which activates from the top when the top is pulled up. If it does not work for a long time, I will post an update to my review. It is my hope that the horizontal design will be more effective. I am just adding a note in passing. If you do not wish to install the escutcheon, it can be left off, for those who believe that their plumbing tube is too short to be used. If you need to seal the end, add a rope of plumbers putty inside the large edge. The putty will seal the edge when it is tight. Having it tight as it was, I had no choice but to do so. If you want, I can add a small dot of sealant in clear so it is not visible.

In addition to liking the look of the decorative backer plate, I bought this faucet. In the design of this connector, the spout pipe is 4 inches long, but the backer plate bumps it out by 1/4", so it is too long to get a good The spout fits great, works well, and looks nice without the backer plate, but it's not the look I want for an existing installation. I would be able to replace the pipe node with a custom length if this setup were to work.

Despite the low price, the quality of the chrome plating and design of the shut off stand out from the less expensive ones on Amazon (I know because I saved a few bucks). There's no question about getting what you pay for here. It failed to work reliably, the shut off stopped working and the plating pitted to the point it had to be replaced. I bought a cheaper brand a few years ago, but it corroded, corroded, and the shut off no longer worked. It is worth it to pay more and get one that lasts.
