There is an apparent difficulty in providing warranties for "kit" items
3/5

My work pretty much requires me to use tools on a daily basis. It was Gear Wrench that I used to put together my first set of wrenches after they were stolen, and after Most of the objects have worked for everything that I have needed them to work. The ratchet action of the short handled socket wrench in the kit also lately stopped working, so I just have it spinning now The book is about a year old, plus or minus. According to the Gear Wrench website, I needed to take the item to the nearest authorized dealer to get it replaced. Home Depot is the dealer nearest to me. It turns out that the person behind the counter says the wrench cannot be handled since the brand is only available online. We next went to Advanced Autoparts, and they said they couldn't warranty the item because it came from a kit, and they couldn't honor the warranty unless it was a direct replacement, and apparently the short handled socket wrench wasn't available as a standalone It doesn't matter how they answer they said they can't The only way I could get in touch with the 3rd party vendor I purchased them from originally (on the advice of Advanced) was through Amazon's return/replacement feature, and that was a complete nightmare. In view of the fact that it was an old order, I had to call in to a call center, where there was a lot of background noise, and I spent about an hour and fifteen getting a message that a message had been sent to the 3rd party retailer. Although they did provide me with all the information I gave them, they did not provide any of the information they received, so I had to do it all over As a result, they informed me that they legally charge a fee (which they said they would waive) to accept a warranty return, that I would need to mail them the defective item, and it would take up to 30 days for them to send me So I wrote Gear Wrench, informed them of the part number, and outlined the problem, and asked if they could either send me a warranty wrench, or if they were willing to send me a kit of internals (which I have In response, I got a 'canned' response saying that I would need to check with a local distributor first. They also told me they could handle the warranty claims if I could send them the item number, a description of the problem, and a picture. do not know how a picture will help them I guess it will show them a ratchet which is To be honest, I am not sure if I have the patience to deal with it any longer because it just seems like another job and a lot of work. Making up for wasted time My strange experience led me to purchase tools with a lifetime warranty to prevent this from happening. Most of what I do is tighten bolts that go through metal tubes- My job is in large part to do that. The reason I don't apply a great deal of force is because it deforms the tube at a minimum and you can't get a great deal of leverage with a short handle implement. At this point, I have invested more in gas, time, and effort than a new ratchet probably would have cost me. Rather than spending $14, I could have spent $7. We have now spent $100 on a rebuild kit and shipped it via Prime, and the tool is working. As such, I would say that they're good tools, they work well, but you should refrain from buying items online that you cannot buy in store, since this will make getting Apex to honor their warranty rather difficult. Craftsman's warranty isn't as good as ours, although the quality is better than ours.

Do you not have a I had a quick look at the ratchets when I first received this set to see if they worked In addition, I checked the sizes of all the sockets to ensure that no repeats existed
4/5

The 1- and both of those things happened because of it I read the reviews here and gave it five stars. The set appears to be in good condition and everything appears to be in working order. One curious thing about the case is that it doesn't seem to have a convenient method of transport. It would probably have some type of handle, I suppose. It would probably be more difficult to carry a case with no handle if there was a handle molded in, but some kind of webbing strap would likely be enough. It is just really awkward to carry the case As a head's up, I will not personally be using the case, but my advice for those who will is to grab it according to the instructions. Clearly, Gear Wrench has an employee under 45 years of age who thinks that the sockets are marked boldly. I find that they are more interested in making their branding stand out on the sockets than in making them stand out by their sizes. Over time, as my eyes aging, I am finding it harder and harder to see these small markings.

A great set of tools, but a cheesy carrying A Gear Wrench tool is just one of hundreds that I own
3/5

There is no doubt that all of them are of top Each impact socket was packaged in a very good, well-made case with mechanical latches and handles built into the case. Since they have been in my truck toolbox for several years, they have been able to survive. Objects made of plastic have an extremely difficult life. Only when the case is separated and added to a drawer style tool box can it function correctly. A phase like this will not last (as long as- ) Being It is not so important that the tools themselves survive. You only have to be worried about losing them if this box goes down. Specifically, I find the tools in this kit to be of the same high quality I have experienced with Gear Wrench products in the past. As it turns out, the ratchets all have fine teeth, not coarse like I expected. The only way to use a ratchet is to use it like this. However, the case is an absolute mess. It's designed to be taken apart so you can lay it flat in a drawer. The only use for it is for that purpose. A pair of hollow plastic pins that are molded into the plastic case halves holds the two halves together. To attach these to the bottom half of the case hinge, insert the screws into holes in the body of the bottom half. As soon as the pins arrived, one of them had completely broken It is not damaged in its original state or in the shipping packaging. Instead of sending this back and getting a new one, I decided to make my own repairs and improvements. One would just have to wait for a new one to fail in the same way. It took a length of 3/16" all thread to replace the damaged hinge, and I cut the thread to precisely match the outside to outside measurement In order to get the hinge pin out of the way, I broke off the damaged pin. The solid end of the hinges were very lightly heated with a small butane torch to soften them. I heated the one end of the all thread, and the one end of the solid threads to soften them. After assembling the case halves, I poked the thread through all four hinge halves starting at the end closest to the case. I am very happy with the results, but I shouldn't have to rerun it Design and engineer a brand new product. As well as heat the plastic, we also heat the thread to ensure that everything fits together snugly. As the threads are woven, the plastic molds around them. There is going to be slack in everything if you drill out the holes. The long drill bit you'll need to do this is going to be pretty expensive. The latches are part of a molded-in piece There is a flaw in the design and it won't It's a different day tomorrow. A second issue is that there is too much space between the two halves of the case. The downside to this is that when you lay down the closed toolbox, some tools will be loose from the upper half and end up on the lower half when you open it. Putting your tools at risk is a truly awesome thing to do. To get a better fit, I cut a piece of cardboard to fit the case and fill in the extra space. The latches were too stressed when the case was closed because of the thickness of the plastic panel. Then I hosed the cardboard down with PB blaster so it would soften up a bit and provide some corrosion protection for I was very pleased with the result. It is now my responsibility to devise a solution for the latches that would ultimately fail in this device. Using Velcro straps I purchased from Amazon will be my first endeavor. Those work fantastically on wrenches and ratchet straps, and I think that may be the perfect fix for this case as soon as the latches don't work.
