I tested it on a hard surface, but I don't see why it wouldn't work on carpeted stairs as well.

I'll begin my review by stating WHY I RETURNED THIS ITEM. I've put together a lot of parts and machinery, and the slot connecting the top piece (where the ladder sits) to the adjustable neck DID NOT FIT. I could see the slots where they should meet and they were perfectly aligned, but they wouldn't "snap" into place. Because the holes were not aligned, the safety pins could not be used, and the platform became wobbly. Because of a project I'm working on, I needed this equipment to work, so I did everything I could to make it work: I perfectly aligned the inserting piece to the slot and gently hammered it straight down with a rubber mallet, but nothing happened. br>In addition, when I opened the Aide Pro, all of the screws, nuts, and washers were scattered all over the place. I discovered a very deliberate rip in the packet that holds them, leading me to believe that someone else had previously owned and returned this product (I made sure to put them all back in the baggy and taped it shut). If someone else owned it before me and was responsible for the assembly flaws, that's also unacceptable because I paid full price for what was supposed to be a brand new item but couldn't use it at all.
When I first saw the advertisements for this device, I had my doubts, but the only other option was scaffolding, which would be a nightmare to install and rent and transport. This unit is very stable and can be adjusted to fit almost any stair width. We used it with a 16-foot extension ladder that was fully retracted to 8 feet. In a typical stairwell, a longer ladder would be ineffective. Also, the adjustable ladders sold at Lowe's, such as Little Giant and others, will not fit this device because they flare out at the base and are too wide to fit the Ladder Aide. One person can set this up with the ladder, but having a helper makes it a little easier. I used it on bare wooden stairs, and because the Ladder Aide has a rubber surface that makes contact with the stairs, there is no risk of the wood being marred. I'm not sure if having thickly carpeted stairs would make them less stable.
This supports a step height of approximately 5 inches to nearly 8 inches. I bought it for my basement stairs, but my steps are actually over 8 inches tall. Given that standard steps are around 7 inches tall, it seems absurd and inflexible to have the maximum supported height just a few inches higher. Supporting 9-inch steps would most likely preclude it from supporting 5-inch steps, but how common are such small steps? Sticking a piece of wood under the lower leg served as a workaround for me. br>br>Assembly is straightforward, but some of the tabs may require a bit of force to fit into their corresponding slots because they fit too snugly. The diagrams for the instructions are a little difficult to understand. I ended up using the screws/nuts, but they are actually optional because the pins can be used instead (which makes it easier to compact the unit for storage). That was news to me, and I was left wondering why I had so many extra pins at the end. I put the extra pins in the upper leg section JUST IN CASE the single pin in the lower leg section failed. br>br>In addition, the instructions and photos show lanyards for each of the pins to attach them to the unit, but they were missing from my box. It did come with a single carabiner that could be used to connect the three pings.
The LAP1 Ladder is the ideal security solution. I found Aide Pro to be exactly what I was looking for. I'd been attempting to figure out how to paint two-dimensional objects for quite some time. The walls were two stories high with a vaulted ceiling and a staircase running beneath them. The stair railing made an extension ladder impossible to use because it was too tall for a Little Giant ladder. I ordered this item as soon as I saw it and have since used it to paint the walls and ceiling with an extension ladder. It was extremely stable and worked flawlessly. It never made me feel uneasy while I was using it. This is something I would recommend to anyone who needs to place a ladder on a stairwell that is difficult to reach.
Rivets were broken because the object was bent to be riveted in the corner and it broke. Whatever you do, it will not fit together. In general, it is risky. The following day, I returned. Don't squander your time or money on this.
I have a very tall stairwell that I desperately want to paint, but I couldn't get the ladder up there safely until I bought this contraption! It was simple to assemble, but be aware that it is significantly heavier than I anticipated. I had no fear of the ladder collapsing while I was on it. I would highly recommend using this instead of making your own out of wood or books because it stayed steady the entire time.
I went with the larger model because the ladder shoes will fit comfortably. On a second-story deck, it was used with a three-stage aluminum Werner ladder. The device appeared to be rock solid and not at all wobbly. It gave me a sense of security when I was using it. It's recommended that you use a ladder at a 75-degree angle, according to the instructions. Now I'll need an angle finder to figure out what 75 degrees actually means. I won't be using the Ladder Pro very often, but it's nice to know it's there if I need it.
There were no problems with the fit, as some others have reported. Pins slipping through holes are a tight fit, but I think that's to be expected. br>The lower support foot extends beyond the platform's dimensions, limiting placement options (you can't fully extend the ladder aid by the step's edge). br>br>I almost wish I could have just rented this because after three placements, I won't need it for a long time.
