I'm not a professional reviewer who gets paid to write about products. I bought it because I wanted something light that would do the job. On the surface, it's fantastic. I have my doubts about the second. In the event of a rescue, there's no way this will be able to break through hard snow. Snow that is softer is a must.
In comparison to my older BD shovel, I really like how light it is. At this time, we don't know how long something will last. It is unlikely to be effective in breaking through thick crusts.
On a winter backpacking trip, I brought it with me. Love it. It performed admirably during a winter backpacking trip at 10,000 feet. It is very light. This shovel, however, will not be able to break through ice-covered snow.
When mountaineering in the snow, having good tools that don't add a lot of weight is essential.
This is a great shovel for what it was intended for and nothing else, which I purchased from another website: I strongly advise it if you are doing ski races on well-maintained paths and want to lighten your backpack. However, I disagree with Mr. Sandsmark; it's not a shovel for backcountry skiing because the handle is too short and the plastic is too fragile to rely on to save your friends in deep snow.
This is a light-duty shovel, not a heavy-duty shovel.
