Yes, it is very easy to stain. Glove oil was used to loosen it up, and the color became darker as a result.
I'm not sure about Collins' axe, but mine has a 10-inch head. It's a perfect fit at 5" by 5". You might be able to go a little longer and taller, maybe 1/2" longer and taller, but not much more. I'm hoping it will be useful to you. For the price and quality, this is an excellent sheath.
In my review, I've added more photos that may answer your question.
The sheath is well-made. It comfortably accommodates my Collins two-bit axe. The saddle ax is something I'm not familiar with. This piece measures approximately 12" wide by 8" tall.

I have a few of these for my various axes, and they are extremely well made and of excellent quality. I don't have a particularly large double-bit axe, but it's certainly not small, and this sheath is far too big for it. It's not the fault of the manufacturer, but it's the only one they have, and everyone around you will be expecting a huge double bit to fly out, only to be disappointed by your average but adequate sized double bit.
I was able to use my black shoe dye to dye it black and then apply a wax finish on top of it. It looked fantastic!br>br>Now I'll be able to sharpen my double-bit Michigan craftsman axe. About 10" x 5" is the size of the head.
The leather is thick and the stitching is strong and tight from rivet to rivet, exactly what you want. br>If it had been custom made, it would have fit perfectly. I'll buy a Harry J. if I need another one in the future. The Epstein Company is a publishing house based in New York City Sheath because the price, the quality, and the materials were all excellent. It appeals to me.
I bought this sheath because it was wider than the others I'd seen, but the opening was only about a quarter inch wide on each side, making it difficult to slide my axe in straight. With a little water, it stretches out nicely. It's probably more on me for not thinking things through thoroughly and having a wider axe than the average. br>br>Thank you for producing such a low-cost, high-quality item.
This was an excellent match for my double-headed craftsman axe. It took a little work to get it to snap, but with a little elbow grease and some saddle soap, it was no problem.
It's made of thick leather and is large enough to quickly take the axe. This is an excellent safety product. It's oversized and has a medieval feel to it.
He was ecstatic! This sheet set is lovely, functional, well-made, and of excellent quality. The head of the axe measures ten inches. 5 inches wide by 4 inches tall This cover (unlike most) fits perfectly on a 25" tall sword with a 3" wide hilt at the head.
It was well worth the money. It's made of genuine leather. It's a perfect match for my Plumb 3 squared double-bit axe. It was done exceptionally well.
