Questions & Answers

What is the distinction between this and the salen?

Hello, Christal. You've posed an excellent question. They are the same size and weight in terms of measurements. The Aneby, on the other hand, is a premium axe, whereas the Salen is a basic axe. The premium axes have a forged head, which makes them a little more durable and allows them to stay sharper for longer. br>Many thanks to ImagineGear for their assistance.

Is this axe suitable for camping in a precipitous environment for an extended period of time? Let's say it's a week. ?

If not properly maintained, it will rust, just like any other high carbon steel axes or knives, especially in that type of environment.

What kind of steel is this, and what is its composition?

In a foundry that has been in business since 1697, the axe head is hand-forged from Swedish axe steel.

What makes this axe different from the Hulafors hunting axe?

The axe is almost identical. In America, I believe Hults Bruk is the most well-known brand.

'Right Handed' Bevel Grind that is asymmetrical? I couldn't find anything similar in any other reviews or literature online, so I thought I'd share it here
3/5

My axe had an asymmetrical bevel grind, similar to what you'd find on carving and furniture axes. This is extremely unusual and, in the end, a deal breaker for me. br>br>That would be fine if that were the entire story, but the grind isn't consistent through the edge in that way. It ends with a symmetrical edge at the bottom, which means the edge wanders from off center to center. I am unable to confirm that this is the case, and I have yet to hear back from Amazon or Hults. I'm leaving room for my own lack of knowledge on the subject, and I'd change my mind if I found out otherwise.

Crooked
3/5

I was overjoyed to receive my first Aneby, only to be disappointed when the handle ended up being crooked. The handle MUST be straight for the money. Not just for the sake of appearances, but also for the sake of safety and functionality. I returned it and requested an exchange from Amazon. The second one is far worse than the first; the axe's head is fine, but an axe without a straight handle isn't a good axe. This axe was purchased to be used rather than to be displayed above the fireplace mantle. That seems to be the purpose of these Swedish-made axes. Because I am not wealthy, I purchase expensive items so that I can enjoy using a high-quality product that I have worked hard to obtain. Hults Bruk may produce a good product, but I believe that all of the seconds end up in the United States, in the hands of unwitting Amazon customers. I mean no disrespect to Amazon. Amazon is where I get a lot of my great products. This one, too, is returning. I'll buy one in person so I can inspect it first; companies that sell defective products on Amazon should be ashamed of themselves. Both came from different sellers, I believe.

A lack of quality control
3/5

It was sharp when it arrived, but that's about all I can say about it. Grain orientation near 90 degrees, gaps in the back of the eye, and so bad in the front that light can pass through it. The handle is splintered on one side from the wedge being driven in, and there are gaps where the handle and wedge are too short; this is a $139 axe. Better than this, I have $20 axes hung. I'm not sure how Hults Bruk is still in business if this is their quality.

Quality and craftsmanship that is reminiscent of the old world
5/5

I'd like to start by saying that I purchased four outdoor bushcraft products: Hults- Bruk: Axe Handle Guard (also known as an "Overstrike Guard"), Axe Holster, and Wax Canvas Tool Roll are all included with the Aneby Axe. You'll see the same review copy again. affixed to each of those items because the same level of quality and craftsmanship applies to all of them The Hide and Drink Axe Handle Guard and Holster is made of high-quality leather that has been beautifully cut and assembled! All I had to do was use some Lexol leather conditioner on it when they arrived to keep the leather in good condition, and I also used it on the Hults-style shoes that came with it. Bruk axe sheath, which was also a little dry. Lexol is the conditioner that horse saddles are treated with to ensure that they last a lifetime. I've been using Lexol conditioner on all of my leather pieces for years, and they've never dried out or cracked, so I recommend that you not only buy whatever leather items you want from Hide and Drink, but also buy some Lexol conditioner to ensure that they last forever. Lexol darkens the leather a little and removes a light shade of color from dyed leather (even browns and blacks), but in all honesty, that's a good trade off for leather that will last a lifetime. br>br>Because I enjoy bushcrafting and camping, I wanted a nice axe, as shown in the photo. I purchased a Swedish Hults- Bruk hand forged 20 inch- Aneby. If you're into bushcraft and need a new axe, this is a fantastic option. This axe is the ideal size and weight for chopping wood as well as carving wood by choking up on the blade. It's the most versatile axe I've ever owned, measuring 20 inches long and weighing 2 pounds. It arrived razor-sharp and with a fantastic edge! br>br>With that in mind, I knew I needed a hand guard to protect the handle from chopping debris, as well as something to hold when I choke up on the blade to carve or chisel wood. That is exactly what this hand guard does. It's the perfect thickness and grip for holding onto, and it's made of high-quality leather. br>br>The Axe Holster is the same way. It's the perfect thickness and quality, with brass rivets holding the two pieces together, and it fits perfectly on a traditional belt, not a tool belt. I keep my smaller Japanese chisels, Scotch eyed auger, and other woodworking tools in the Wax Canvas Tool Roll bag. tools for the job- Morakniv (in Swedish): The Wax Canvas Tool Roll bag is also of exceptional quality and comes with a wood carving knife and a hook knife. It has the appearance of having been made in the 1800s, when quality and craftsmanship were valued. br>br>Another cool feature of this Guatemalan-based company, Hide and Drink, is that every item I purchased came with a personally signed craftsman's card with the person's name handwritten on it who created your one-of-a-kind piece. When someone takes the time to sign each individually handcrafted piece, you know you're getting more than just quality; you're also getting accountability.

This is an excellent all-around axe
4/5

I've had this axe for about a year and it's a great all-around tool. It's a jack-of-all-trades that doesn't excel at anything but gets the job done. I prefer it to the GB Small Forrest as a camp axe because it has a slightly thicker taper profile for splitting wood. If necessary, it can cut down a tree, but the GB SF is superior. This one worked out well for me because I split more than I chop. It's easy to delimb, and it's heavy enough to drive wooden tent stakes into the ground. etc. , etc. , etc. , etc. , etc. , etc. , etc. , etc. , etc It's my go-to axe for trips, and I usually pair it with a GB hand hatchet for finding things, as well as a small knife, and I'm good to go. br>Handle is a term used to describe a person's ability to hold something in their I returned the first one because it was terrible. The second one arrived in good condition, and the bit is of good quality. I have nothing negative to say.

The money spent was not well spent
3/5

This axe was one I really wanted to like. The edge is sharp and feels good in my hand, but it's ground with a chisel. It's supposed to have a scandi grind, as far as I know. Maybe I'm being a snob, but the craftsmanship is pretty shoddy. There isn't even a full chisel grind here. It's all over the place. My friend has two anebys, and while they are both scandi, their grinds are noticeably different. It is unquestionably not value for money.

Indeed, a stalwart
5/5

Over the last year or so, I've put this in and taken it out of my cart about a dozen times. It was a lot of money for a small axe, and it exceeded my expectations for how much I should spend on a tool. With much thought, I'd spend this much on a drill, but an axe? Nah. After borrowing it from a friend over the weekend for a camping trip, I finally gave in and bought it. Because it's such a useful tool, I wish I had gotten it sooner. The other benefit is that I'll be able to give this to my son in the future, and he'll be able to pass it on to his son, which will never happen with a drill. Certain tools have a simplicity to them that will ensure their relevance and utility for future generations. That's exactly what an axe, like this axe, is.
