Sure, you can do that, it works well. These are what I use in River for bank poles.

These are available on the market in several forms. There is a little bit of difference between each one. There have been four different models I have tried, and the model I am using here is the best. As far as the trigger goes, it seems to work great, and it's sensitive, as opposed to the others, where there were mechanical issues or the trigger wouldn't The ones you need to get are these.
The first time I saw these was while fishing, so I bought some and I am so glad I did. They are great. These automatically vibrate so you will know when there is a fish taking your bait. Only a small drawback is if the fish is too small sometimes it does not go off, so you have to watch the line from time to time, but most of the time you can tell by the appearance of the fish on it.
