I would definitely order the medium size; the sides were a little short for me, but with a shihtzu, you should be fine. I'd put some Velcro under the chin to keep the hood in place, especially if it's windy. To get the ears in, I cut slits in the hood. to keep the hood on (only with floppy ears would this work) It's fantastic!
Hand wash in cold water in a laundry bag, then dry by hand. I'm a professional at it.
It has a hole in it. The opening can be used to attach a leash to the collar or a harness to the dog. It's a little further back now, so it might be easier to attach the leash by pulling the harness rings. I've worn it both ways, and it's a great rain coat (despite the fact that we haven't had much rain in California).

A little on the large side. The sizing was a little off, but it was still very cute for the price. My Maltese weighs in at 13 pounds. He was 15" long when I measured him, so he was in the middle of the size range. As a result, I went ahead and purchased the large size. He can't wear it because it's too big. However, it continues to work because he does not mind wearing clothes and does not attempt to remove them. However, a medium would have been preferable. I have to pin the hood in the back because it covers his eyes. This is where the small button comes in handy. The back legs have elastics, which is a nice feature. The tummy strap is also very adjustable, so it can fit bellies of all shapes and sizes.
This raincoat is absolutely fantastic! It's adorable as well as useful. I have a 10 pound Chihuahua, and the small is perfect for her. I can wear a sweater underneath during the colder months because the leg and waist straps are adjustable.
We're caring for Ethel, a pocket pittie with congenital kidney disease who can't physically refuse to pee when it's raining. So I got her this raincoat in the hopes of improving her situation a little, and as you can see by her face, she absolutely adores it. br>br>The coat is well-made, and I'm a big fan of dog coats that have leg straps to keep them from blowing or riding up - especially if it's one that's supposed to keep them dry. Of course, the hood does not stay up, but I had not expected it to. The pattern is adorable, and the fact that it folds up makes it even better. br>br>Because we use the front clip on our harness, we don't need the hole at the top of the back, but I did test our harness' d-ring. The ring did not fit through the hole - If you're using a 2 Hounds Freedom harness, keep this in mind. br>br>I followed the size chart and found it to be accurate, unlike others. Ethel is 36 pounds, has a 25-inch chest, is 18 inches long, and has a 15-inch neck, so the XL is perfect for her.

We don't have any major rainstorms, so it's perfect for the light rain we get. When we get home, I simply hang it on the door to dry, and it dries quickly. On our walks, she gets a lot of awwwws, which is a plus.
dying from laughter The hood, on the other hand, can be adjusted with a handy snap. I needed tiny paper snaps (the metal black ones, in the smallest size) for this project. I had to go up a size because my dog is rounder than long, and the elastic around the back legs is a little strange at first, but he got used to it. OUR problem is that this tiny Australian Shepherd was right on the cusp of going up a size. However, I reasoned that as long as his face was hidden, I could change the bulkiness. He will not go out in the rain because he does not want to get his face wet! This method works wonderfully (but be prepared to laugh yourself silly).
We live in the Pacific Northwest, so a raincoat is a must! The back leg straps are brilliant, and my dog was still able to do his business with them on. I ordered for my 9-pound puppy, and it was a perfect fit. I will say that the hole for the leash to connect with your dog's collar or harness appears to be more harness friendly than collar friendly, as we were unable to loop his leash through, preventing the hoodie from going over his head. I'm confident that we'll find a solution in the near future.
My dog likes this raincoat, but he doesn't. It is, however, simple to put on and provides protection from the rain. It's a little heavy for our hot, rainy weather here in South Florida, but it's fine. We often walk just before dawn, when it's not as hot, and it's a good time for reflection. He despises it, but I think it's good for him because he also despises getting wet and drives me crazy if he doesn't get at least one walk every day. It slips around on him, probably because he won't let me put his legs through the back elastics, and it's impossible to use with a harness because the only hole is on his neck, not his back, where a harness would connect to the leash.
