Questions & Answers

Can you tell me if this crate/kennel is IATA compliant? A 65 lb. weight limit has been established for airline cargo. What are mutts?

We believe the answer is "it depends" based on our experiences. Here are some notes on our experiences, if it's worth anything. In order to fly from Seattle to Oslo with a 90 pound German Shepherd we had to comply with the following standards The crates are quite vague, and airlines take different approaches to the objectives ("comfortable," "safe," etc.). There were no restrictions for width or height, only for It was not possible to find an airline that had a weight restriction. When it comes to the height restriction, some airlines measure to the top of the ears sitting, while others measure to the top of the "head" (no clarification) while From the tip of one airline's nose to the tail, they measured length. The nose to the You've got it! We had to work with a freight company because the airline (Iceland Air) would not accept a large crate at the airport. Thereafter, you are subject to multiple entities' varying criteria (airlines, freight companies, etc. In addition to the FAA, IATA, and USDA, If you change planes in another country, you would do the equivalent) To make sure the strictest requirements were met, we purchased something that met them all. Consequently, we discovered that the largest crate was the only way to ensure that our dog wouldn't become stranded in the middle of nowhere This is in addition to the fact that the series 7 crate created some logistical issues. British Airways refused to accept the crate (regardless of the dog's size). We were told the same thing by an American. The airline quotes were provided by United, Iceland Air, and SAS. I was right about that crate not fitting on a 737 or an A320. Although United only flies 737s to Oslo, the freight representative did not seem to be aware of that restriction. It is hard to imagine how screwed we would have been if we had arrived at Heathrow planning to fly United to Oslo. In any case, if you plan to get the series 7 crate, be sure to travel on sufficiently large aircraft for the entire journey. We flew Iceland Air in order to get there. Our flight was on a 757, so we were under no threat of a delay. In any case, I hope this was helpful in some way. We found this crate to be practical, but it was rather difficult for airline reps to deal with they were unprepared for it. Hope you have a good day!

Do you have a bolt on it?

10th of a millimeter 3/16 inch If you do that, you can go to the hardware store to buy some bolts and nuts. These are carriage bolts,

What is the FAA approval status of this kennel?

This product is 100% approved by the FAA. A world-class airline design used by airlines around the globe. While this can be said, you must still check with your individual airline as they all seem to have different rules, and the rules can vary depending on the type of aircraft being used for your

It is not possible to get airline approval without making modifications to kennels
5/5

The closest one comes to the mark! Read about international pet travel! Despite looking at many kennels, this is the only one that seems to meet Agriculture and International Air Transport Association have approved it. Since we were in the midst of a military move from the states, this is a review of the international kennels The Kennel includes the following features There are 11 plastic bolt holes in this kennel. The only requirement that this kennel does not follow is this one. For every flight, metal nuts and bolts are now required. The avionics system used to come with plastic nuts. Four additional tie down holes are present on this carrier. It has 11 bolt holes and 11 bolt I had an airline that specifically required every hole to be covered with a bolt. That's why 15 metal nuts and screws were needed. It is possible on some airlines to leave the 4 tie down holes empty, but you will need to make sure you order the bolts in advance in order to receive the right quantity. The shipping time limit prevented us from doing this and we ended up buying three kits. It was not possible to buy metal bolts on Amazon with prime. You need these anyway—they're all you need.

The crate is smaller than advertised
3/5

I bought the 21" x 16" crate but found that the actual space available is only 17 long x 12 wide. The picture compares the dimensions of this crate with one that is actually 21" long x 13" wide. A 12 pound cat is our average size. It's plain to see how small it is. Although the crate itself appears to be a good quality, I'm disappointed that the advertised specs came from the outermost edge of the seams where the fasteners go, not from the usable space within.

There are errors in the size charts provided by Petmate in its graphic
3/5

It appears that the sizing charts provided by Petmate in their graphic are inaccurate and misleading, as they indicate measuring from the floor to the withers (shoulders) of pets rather than the top of the head (as required by airlines). The result of this was an incorrectly-written We bought a kennel that suits your dog's size. It would fit in a 70-lb kennel, but since the pet weighs about 80 lbs, it would not fit in the kennel usable for 80-lb dogs A compact design (40" L X 27" W X 30" H) can hold up to 90 pounds (i. e. In comparison to his size, he is short). Our pet was refused entry to Petmate's kennel and many of us missed our flight because of the kennel's shortcomings. A refund will be paid in full as soon as possible, and a free replacement for the next larger size kennel will follow. (As well as others have already pointed out, the claim by Petmate that "Sky Kennel is considered the Gold standard for pet travel" is highly suspect as they fail to include the hardware required for airline travel (plastic instead of metal fasteners). Even though I had already corrected this shortcoming in my preparation for travel, the consumer who blindly trusts Petmate's advertising may still be surprised by this reality.

It needs some new hardware before it meets international aviation regulations, but so far it has been a good find for the cat
4/5

Using this kennel when I move from the U. S. will be a great comfort for my medium sized cat. It is time to go to According to my research, it complies with nearly all airline regulations for international transportation of cats that will be stored in the cargo hold of the airplane. The United States is not the only country you need to be aware of if you are traveling from another country. In the case of British Airways or Alaska Airlines, this kennel does not meet the size requirements for dogs or cats (you need a size 200 or above). Also, the plastic nuts must be replaced with metal nuts for international travel whether you are flying United or a British airline. It is convenient that the hardware you need is also available via amazon, most likely under the kennel's product page where items are frequently bought together. I say that first because the kennel appears to be well made, and it arrived in good shape too. After putting the top on top of the bottom, the process took only a few Including two "Live Animal" stickers already on the kennel as well as an additional three stickers so you can decorate it as you like. For several months, I will not be traveling, so I have yet to attach my crate's door. In addition to putting some blankets inside, I hoped that my cat would enjoy being locked in her new "cat fort" as well as be less traumatized if she had to remain inside for hours on end as part of the trip. Everything seems to be going well so far! The review will be updated after using it on a trip. Here's an update During the flight of my cat abroad, I was able to use this kennel. It took a long time to clear customs and a layover in the USA before her pet cargo shipment was delivered to London Heathrow. I upgraded the plastic nuts and bolts to metal ones so that the kennel would comply with international pet transport standards. A few hours before the trip, she was forced to ride in the car for several hours. Her pet hate is the automobile. Her usual state is yowling and throwing up and she is While inside this kennel, she didn't speak a word throughout the entire While she slept, she woke up periodically if we drove over bumps, but she seemed very at ease the entire time. She seemed much more at ease in this car seat than previous carriers had made her feel. However, the real testament to the quality of this carrier is that while she has had a terrible experience flying overseas, she still loves it when she spends time with My final recommendation would be to definitely consider this carrier if you're shipping your cat anywhere. Also, make sure to replace your cat's hardware before transport, and don't underestimate the benefits of letting the cat get comfortable with the carrier before travelling.
