No, it's not variable speed, but I did cultivate my garden area twice, and the soil is now "fluffy." With a pitch fork, you can't do that! This tool is ideal for a small to medium-sized garden.
This tiller is a personal favorite of ours. My sister and I, both in our 60s, use it. The tiller, like a larger tiller, can be difficult to hold on to if the ground has never been tilled before or if it is rocky.

I replaced a gas-powered model because of oil, gas, and noise, but I didn't expect the electric model to have the same power or consistency. And, as is customary for me, I'm completely wrong about the electric tiller. With this design and powerful electric engine, Scotts hit the proverbial nail on the head; I was almost knocked off my feet the first time I used the tiller. That was how powerful it was. I ignored the numerous warnings about holding, preparation, and safety, assuming that no electric Tiller could possibly be that good or powerful. I had a new and well-deserved respect for Scotts and this Electric tiller after I stood up and collected my thoughts. The tiller is stronger than the craftsman I'm replacing, despite the fact that the noise level is high but not annoying. It digs deeper and more consistently than a gas model, and it does so without the mess. If I'm being picky, the electric cord can be a pain, but it's nothing compared to hauling gas and oil all day. I'm aware that there are battery-operated units, but I wanted to get as much time as possible without having to change batteries or, worse, wait for one to charge. Even that, however, is becoming more convenient. I can't say enough good things about this machine; it does everything my gas-powered machine does, but without the mess. br>Scotts did an excellent job designing and manufacturing this fantastic machine. br>joe.
Because it's electric, and I've only ever seen/used gas-powered tillers, I was initially skeptical. However, I will state that this device ACTUALLY WORKS. I've been meaning to till up a side yard with a dense, almost concrete-like surface. In Dallas, there was top soil and clay underfoot, and this thing did a fantastic job. The first pass aerated the soil perfectly, and the second pass completed the task. I got hung up on one when I ran over a massive concrete/rock chunk that was hidden beneath the ground; I unplugged it and worked the chunk out, and it started right up; I'd buy it again in a heartbeat. It's ideal for a small house, a city lot, or general landscaping projects. I'm not sure I'd try a big garden or a big project with it, but it did exactly what I needed it to do. It's also fairly light and easy to store, and it fits nicely in the trunk of a car if the top handle is unscrewed.
I must say, I'm blown away by how simple it is to use. I have a plot of land that I'd like to turn into a garden. It's a filthy clay. Dynamite comes in small packages, as the old adage goes. It bounces a little when it hits the hard clay for the first time. However, once it had a good grip on the dirt, it went to town and chewed it up like it was nothing! As soon as I got back inside, I had to tell my brother about it, and he'll be ordering one as well.
This fantastic tiller surpassed our expectations in every way. This tiller is easy to assemble, maneuver, and outperforms other, more expensive tillers we've owned in the past, including our Mantis. The blade width is adjustable, so you can use all four blades or remove the outer two blades to dig narrow trenches. With incredible power and none of the odors associated with a gas-powered vehicle, tiller with a motor Wow! We are so happy we purchased this.
The dirt had been impacted to the point where it would not drain. It was a breeze to dismantle with this device. I decided to buy it rather than rent it because I intend to use it on a regular basis to avoid the problem recurring.
I have five vegetable raised beds and needed a way to churn the soil in preparation for the new season. I bought this small tiller in the hopes that it would do a half-decent job, but I didn't have high expectations. Wow, was I taken aback! The first time you hit the power button on this thing, you'd better hold on tight because it's a POWERFUL machine. I was blown away by how well this thing worked. In no time at all, I had churned up the dirt to the very bottom of all five beds. If you don't hold on tight, it'll take off on you once more. It's best to start at one end and work your way backwards; it'll buck and jump and dig deep as the tines spin forward, pulling against you as you go backwards. The results have exceeded my expectations. REMEMBER TO HANG ON TIGHT IF YOU PURCHASE ONE OF THESE!.
