This product does not work in my pond, so I had to return it.
Yes, it activates at a specific temperature, but the water will not feel warm, but it will keep the fish warm. If it was hot to the touch, your power bill would be excruciating. We also connected it to an air line, which will keep a significant portion of the surface de-icing. We knew it was working because it had iced. So far, the item has arrived dead and has done nothing. I put it in the pond that is well under 300 gallons two days before a freezing snap when there was no ice in the water, plugged it in to give plenty of time for the thermostat to read temperatures are dropping to freezing and turn on, but yesterday the pond had a layer of ice on top and no fish were around it, indicating that it is not doing what it is supposed to do or working at all. I double-checked that it was plugged in and that the outlets were operational, both of which were. The company said to put it in the freezer to make sure it worked, but that's easier said than done with most freezers, and even if it did, it's still useless because it allowed ice to form all around the pond and didn't make a hole anywhere above it, and there are no fish around it, indicating that there's no or too little heat radiating off of it and rising. I emailed the company pictures of the frozen pond above the deicer, and the response makes it seem like they actually want me to pay to send it back so they can inspect it, because there was no pre-paid packaging slip, and they require me to return it for a refund or replacement. I checked the small pond this morning and it is just as frozen as before, which I photographed and sent to the company; if they insist on charging me to return it, I will return it through Amazon for a refund, hoping to avoid being charged to return a defective non-functioning item.
This deicer is supposed to turn on when the temperature in the pond drops below freezing, preventing the pond from freezing over. That has never happened to me before. I'd have to break or pour hot water over the ice that this heater couldn't stop from forming, then pull it out of the water, where the freezing air temperature would magically turn on the heater. I could then toss it back into the pond and let it do its job. The heater would keep pumping if the weather remained bitterly cold, keeping the water from freezing, but if it got warm enough to turn itself off, it would not turn on again until I pulled it out of the water, exposing it to freezing temperatures! It was a huge letdown, and I'm on the lookout for a new one that will both work and not fry my fish. According to Amazon reviews, this one sounded pretty good, with no reports of overheating, pond liner melting, or fish being killed. And while it met those criteria, it fell short in every other way.
This is something you should not buy. I should have paid attention to what the other people had to say. This product was completely ineffective. This heater was purchased for our pond and installed. It worked for the first two days, and we were overjoyed that we could finally turn our pond into a home for the Koi we'd always wanted. We adjusted the pH of the pond's water and added a water conditioner, and once everything was in order, we purchased the Koi, acclimated them, and released them. We went outside to check on the Koi this morning. All of them had died. Last night, the heater broke down, and the water temperature became dangerously low. This heater is low-cost. If you need a heater, please get a better one and don't waste your time with this one. I'm so disappointed that we spent so much money on the fish and accessories only for them to perish.
Despite the fact that this is a submersible pond, it still needs to be de-watered. It's also depicted as a floating pond de-icer. I wanted something a little icier. I read the reviews that said it didn't warm up their pond well, but I figured it would be fine for us because we only have a 100 gallon pond. br>br>While the water doesn't ice over, it is definitely not warm. I can touch the metal coils with my hands and 30% of the time I might feel some warmth there. Even so, making a dent in the pond is insufficient. The fact that the fish do not congregate around it indicates that there isn't much heat present. I can tell you that the water temperature is still just above freezing, but my koi are still hibernating.
My pond water was actually electrified, killing my fish, and I was shocked when I put my hand in the water to retrieve my dead fish. I'm not sure if my fish died from being too cold or from electrocution, but they all died as a result of this defective product.
