Questions & Answers

I recently purchased this and placed it in my pond for a day. I'm not sure how to tell if it's working or not. It is completely silent. ?

The device is a de-escalation unit. icer. Is your pond frozen over? This is my second unit; the first one worked flawlessly for ten years. I have a 3,000 gallon Koi pond that is 4 feet deep in the center and is covered in ice 12 inches thick due to the cold weather. If your pond is iced over, they recommend drilling a hole through the ice and placing the unit over it; it will eventually melt the ice around it, just like mine did. My unit maintains a 12-inch ice hole the size of the entire unit. This isn't a pond heater; it's used to keep an open hole in the ice so harmful gases can escape. The unit makes no noise and only gets warm on the bottom when the thermostat indicates that heat is required.

Our pond has a capacity of only 55 gallons. Is it safe to use this space heater? Or do you have a suggestion for a model that would work?

We have a pond that is approximately 800 gallons in size. It works in ours, and the heater's sole purpose is to keep a hole in the ice so that gasses from decaying materials beneath the ice do not kill the fish. I hope this has been of assistance. Richard

Is it just me, or does anyone else notice a light ring when the heater is turned on? I bought a second one and have yet to see it on. It's been below freezing in Ohio this week. ?

Mine has no light, but the heater is clearly working if there is open water inside the ring.

Is this something that would work for a 450-pound dog? Is it possible to have a pond with a capacity of 500 gallons ?

Thank you for reaching out to us. Depending on your climate, this deicer will suffice for ponds up to 1000 gallons, so 450-500 gallons. It should be no problem to get 500 gallons. Please keep in mind that this device is only intended to keep a hole in the ice for oxygen exchange during the winter. It has no effect on a body of water's overall temperature. AN EXCELLENT POND HEATER
5/5

My lovely Victorian pond is 3 feet deep and was saved by this heater during a harsh New England winter when my previous pump died while stuck in ice. 10 feet long (in the shape of a kidney) is turn- My 1880 home in Connecticut was designed by a mason who also built the century. This heater kept a hole open in my pond a few winters ago, preventing the buildup of lethal gas and allowing my lovely goldfish to survive until the ice melted in the spring. My goldfish are between the ages of 12 and 6, and some are over 12 years old. 7 inches in length Throughout the year, they remain in my pond 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 😙.

8-inch discs melted So far, I've been blown away by the 10" of ice
4/5

For my small koi pond, I purchased this. Unfortunately, as this was my first year with a fish pond (which came with the house), I was unaware of the need to keep the pond from completely icing over. I wasn't sure if this deicer would be up to the task because the pond was completely frozen over and we had about two weeks of single digit temperatures in New York, especially since the instructions said to use an ice auger if the ice was thicker than 2". I connected it and placed it on top of the ice, though I did have to assist the deicer. It would melt a large amount of ice, causing the water to pool and the deicer to float (as it should). So I'd try to keep the deicer in contact with the ice by removing the water as much as possible. It melted completely through the ice and into the pond water after 5 days. Surprisingly, there was around 8-foot of snow on the ground. My pond has a total of ten inches of ice! I was astounded that the pond had frozen so much and that this deicer had been able to break through over 10" of ice!! So far, I'm impressed; however, I'm interested to see how this holds up over time, as some reviews claim that the item's longevity is questionable.

Time will tell if the decier will work in the frigid temperatures of North Dakota
5/5

This pond deicer has worked well for me thus far; however, because I live in North Dakota, I was initially skeptical of the low wattage. My current temperature is 3 degrees, with a feeling of minus 10. However, I chose to cover the pond in order to help it avoid direct air temperatures. Two air stones are also in use to keep the water moving and provide oxygen. Before I put the deicer in, my pond had frozen over. My fish was fine; all I did was place it on top of at least one inch of ice, which melted around it. The deicer has left the hole completely open. But, in the past, I've kept my fish outside with nothing but an air bubbler for oxygen and no heat or deicer, and my fish survived and even produced offspring. And it was a bitterly cold Winter at the time. Because I have a 600 gallon tank, the low wattage was the most important factor in my decision. We'll keep you updated as the weather cools down. Following up on March 28th, my pond remained ice-free throughout the winter, and my fish made it through. Yes, it was a cold winter.

Changed jobs four times in four winters
3/5

This was purchased on September 16, 2012, and it hasn't worked in the last few weeks. I had hoped for it to last a little longer, so I'm a little let down. Also, this has only recently become apparent, despite the fact that we've had a week of temperatures well below zero. My pond isn't very deep, and I was afraid my fish would freeze to death. br>br>In its place, we installed a Farm Innovators Model P- 418 (purchased from a local fish store because it was 0 degrees Fahrenheit this morning). It has a heating element that is encased in cast aluminum, but it has over 10X the wattage. We also bought a "Farm Innovators Model TC-100" that appears to be well-made. 3 Thermo Cube Thermostatically Controlled Outlets for Cold Weather" for the K In 2012, the H heater was recommended for the P-type heater. To conserve energy, dial 418. (I opted for a 100w K. ) For my 75 gallon pond, I wanted to use the least amount of electricity possible. It was fine until it wasn't anymore. )br>br>Today, I paid a premium to replace the heater (over Amazon's price, which is comparable to the K price). To be honest, given the P-, I wouldn't buy it again at this price. The cost of 418 and my personal experience I think I'll go with K. I'll take it apart once I've gotten it out of the ice to investigate the failure mode, but an ohmmeter across the plug indicates an open circuit. I'm guessing it just burned out, or that I jarred it and broke the filament (though I was careful because it's just plastic and it has to stay airtight to float, as I saw in the reviews). br>br>One advantage of buying from my neighborhood fish and pet store is that they mentioned poking a hole in the ice with a pot of boiling water. That worked perfectly, and when I removed the pot, my fish appeared to be in good health and were lingering near the heat source.

I'm keeping a hole in the ice, but I'm not sure how the fish will react
4/5

This is the first year I've used this product, which I purchased to replace another brand of deodorant. Years of use had worn down the icer. This winter, it has consistently maintained a hole in the ice to allow gases to escape the pond. Since the holidays, snow has covered the ice, and temperatures have ranged from 0 to 20 degrees, but temperatures have been warm enough for a good thaw in the last two days. My pond is still frozen over, and temperatures are expected to drop in the coming days, so I'm keeping this plugged in. Unfortunately, I discovered that two of my largest koi (10-inch) had died when I checked my pond today. They were floating by this unit (14 inches) and were 14 inches in diameter. I noticed that other fish and tadpoles were congregating around it as well, and I'm curious if they're attracted to the warm water. as well as whether or not this will disrupt their hibernation. There could be other reasons why I lost those fish, but perhaps if the product came with more detailed instructions on the box or even here on Amazon, it would help to explain what is involved in using this product in a backyard pond.
