Questions & Answers

Would this work as chicken water in the winter in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket?

It would, but it's a little too aggressive of a heater for that size. Mine is for a 400 gallon small duck pond (8x4x2') and it works perfectly! I'd go with a smaller bucket for a bucket, though.

I'm not sure what size gfi to use. ?

We have never had any issues with our 20 amp.

Is the pond liner going to be melted as a result of this?

It is designed to not melt a plastic tank, but it's difficult to say whether the pond liner would be able to withstand the heat if it drifted to the edge of a "beach" area where the water is shallow. Make an anchor (e.g., with a piece of string). concrete block) and tie the power cord to the anchor (at the point where it enters the heater body) so it stays in place in the middle of the pond. The power cord will be free to connect to your extension cord as a result.

Is your electric bill going up a lot as a result of this?

There didn't appear to be much use of electricity. I keep mine all winter in a 55 gallon plastic barrel of water for rabbits, and it doesn't show up on my bill.

This method is ineffective
3/5

I gladly ordered four of these, noting that they could be used in plastic water tanks. I have two 1000 gallon polyethylene tanks that must be kept de-contaminated. iced water for use in the home But, as I have confirmed with a clamp-on amp meter, these things don't always turn on when the tank they're floating in is completely covered in ice. One of them performed admirably for the majority of the season, while the other two were doomed from the start. Their only value, in my opinion, is as shooting targets, but they are significantly more expensive than a box of 5 inch clays. The 1500 watt model that comes with the wire cage attached works great and is 100% reliable at all times . The only thing I dislike about it is that the galvanized cage begins So all I did was wire brush the cage and apply a coat of spray-on primer. At the end of the season, apply rust-resisting paint to it. The cage should be made of aluminum or stainless steel, but it isn't. I'd gladly pay the extra money for such a cage if it were available, but it isn't. Indeed, it appears that the caged 1500 watt model will be phased out entirely. SAD. In the future, I'll need to look for a different solution. Meanwhile, as backups for the two 1500 watt caged models I'm currently using, I just ordered two of the four remaining 1500 watt caged models.

For ponds, this is an excellent product
5/5

Farm Innovators pond products are one of my favorites. I own three green deicers, each of which lasts about two years. Because I have hard water, the lyme begins to build up on the product, which I'm sure contributes to their short lifespan. I recently purchased this item, as well as a new "green" deicer, from Pond Innovators. In my Koi pond, I use this product in conjunction with my new green deicer, and they work great together. This winter, I haven't had to remove any ice from the surface of my pond. This has caused all of my airlines to be open. My pond liner is vinyl, and neither this product nor the green one has melted or damaged it. I may be overdoing it with two deicers, but I'm very OCD about my fish, and I have no desire to start carrying buckets of hot water out to my pond to dethaw thick ice. br>br>I live in southeastern Ohio, and we've had a particularly harsh winter thus far. There's a lot of snow and temperatures in the teens. So far, everything has gone well. I would highly recommend it, but keep in mind that it is not a "lifetime" product; expect it to last maybe two years. If you have hard water, it will take three years to break down. It's not too expensive to buy again. All of these deicers come with a warranty, but I've never bothered to fill it out because I'm too lazy. br>br>Shipping is also exceptional. According to Amazon, the item should arrive in 1 to 2 weeks. Because it wasn't Prime, it took 2 weeks to arrive, but after ordering via FedEx, I received it in just 2 days. THANK YOU SO MUCH!.

DOA
3/5

This company stock tank heaters work out of the box about 90% of the time else they don not work at all else they don not work at all else else else else else Each year, you must purchase a new one because they are not built to last but to fail. This one I got in October and it isn't working now in December, just as the ice is starting to form, and there isn't any way to return it and get my money back.

I didn't think it could possibly be any worse than my previous brand, but I was wrong
3/5

I was expecting this brand to be a game changer on my ranch, so I bought two to try out on one of our stock tanks. Needless to say, the next morning I spent over an hour breaking and shoveling ice out of our tank. The only saving grace was that it had melted 2 inches around the unit, allowing me to move this pile of **** out of the way. br> The brand I've been using for years, 'API,' has gotten worse in terms of reliability with each passing year, and now only lasts three weeks. This appears to be the case with this brand. I'm not sure it was even possible to say anything bad, but it was! At the very least, I don't have to break ice with API; I simply replace it every three weeks.

It's ideal for a duck pond made of plastic
5/5

This item was delivered on time and performed exactly as expected. I'm using it to make a duck pond out of a 4' x 4' plastic swimming pool. It prevents the water from freezing, allowing the ducks to use it all year long.

Works
5/5

I felt heat right away after a quick test out of the box. I only had it plugged in for 30 seconds. br>We'll see how it goes over the winter, but I've had a lot of experience with stock tank heaters on the farm, and this one appears to be a good one.

I think he's fantastic
5/5

It does an excellent job of defrosting my rubbermaid tank. I take it out during the day because it bothers one of the horses, who refuses to drink from the tank with it in it. It's the second time I've done it.

It served as the foundation for my fish pond
4/5

It was . It served as the foundation for my fish pond. Due to the stiffness of the cord underneath, it was a little difficult to get to float. It kept my Northern Ohio pool ice-free right around the unit (unlike the sunken types I had previously used, which kept the entire pool ice-free but caught all the muck on its elements), which was my main goal for providing winter water to birds and critters.
