When I bought mine, there was only one size available; I don't believe you could make it any smaller without allowing the heater element to come closer to any point of contact, and the cage's purpose is to keep the element from getting too close to anything it might damage.
During the winter, mine was always in my horse's water tub, and during the rest of the year, it was just in the barn. There's no reason for it to be inside your home, in my opinion.
To avoid direct contact with the plastic, I would wrap the cage in chicken wire or some other lightweight wire. I've used composite plastic in commercial horse tanks, but I've always built a cage around them - simply for the sake of safety Keep in mind that these are only heating the water to prevent it from freezing.
When the water reaches a certain warm temperature, the thermostatically controlled coil does not turn on the electric. It turns on and stays on if the water is cold.

I was relieved to come across this one because I am already familiar with it and how it operates. The most important thing to remember is that it does not turn off when there is no water, so if you don't pay attention, it can overheat, and if you put it in a plastic water bucket for the horses and leave it empty, it will melt before it overheats on you. If this one is as good as the last one I bought (so far), and you properly maintain the water level, it should last for years.
This heater is used in my 90 gallon fish/frog pond. I'm currently keeping goldfish in it, and so far it's been a success. The heater appears to be in good working order. Despite this, I've had to replace three heaters. They don't appear to be able to last more than one season. This one is brand new; I purchased it last fall. However, we'll see how long this one lasts. In the spring, I'll update you.
I use these to keep my house water storage tank from freezing in these bitterly cold Alaska winters, and I replace them once a year as a precaution. This year, I added another because it had a longer cord; however, that other brand failed, causing the tank to ice up, and these also failed. So I'm going back to just using this brand because it's what's worked for me in Fairbanks since 1996. My only criticism is that the cord is too short; I would happily pay more for the same product with a longer cord.
The end result is exactly what you would expect. When we opened the box inside our house, however, the smell was so bad that we had to take everything outside because the smell of cigarettes was so strong it was nauseating.
The unit heats water, but once it shuts off, it won't heat it again until the temperature drops below a certain level. So it didn't work for what I wanted it to do, which was to keep a pool warm. But, for the price I paid, I'm going to keep it for use in the winter when I might need to keep water from freezing, which is what it's designed for.
When it broke, I went out and bought another. This went on for about three years. Then, in November 2018, I purchased a replacement, which failed when I tried to use it today - It appears that the unit has a short. It saw very little use because I only used it during the three months of winter when the weather was extremely cold. Since it's been just over a year and they have a one-year warranty, I sent an email to the company's customer service address. So they should replace it, but I'm not sure how useful that will be if it only lasts a few months.
The warmer is extremely effective. Although it floats, which is a disadvantage, it functions well and I am glad I ordered it. It'll keep the birdbath open throughout the winter, which is exactly what I wanted.
I swapped it out for one of these. This pond heater is far superior to my old one. My pond is 400 gallons and there isn't a speck of ice on it yet! I'm in love with my new heater!.
