A lot of the time he slides. This is a nice mat. However, it is not suitable for rolling out dough or pastry. It's smooth on both sides, which makes it difficult to stick to a counter or other flat surface. Although I like how translucent it is and how easy it is to clean, it is ineffective as a pastry mat. I had to hold one side of the dough while kneeding it, and when I brought out the rolling pin, I had to completely remove it because it slid all over the table.
I bought these to protect the tops of my washing machine and dryer. They're black stainless steel front loaders that scratch easily when I put anything solid on top of them. It was becoming increasingly aggravating, and I realized I needed to take action to safeguard them. These were the ideal solution, especially since one of them was on the dryer. I got them in black, and they match the black stainless steel finish perfectly. They have a good grip and have completely eliminated my scratching problem. Yes, I'm using them for something that isn't advertised, but it just goes to show how versatile they are. The only minor criticism I have is that I wish it came in a larger size; otherwise, it's a fantastic product.
I was on the lookout for a pastry/rolling mat that wasn't hideous. I find the red and clear ones to be unsightly, and I've seen how they discolor. This was purchased for countertop use, not for use in the oven, for rolling and kneading my baking projects. However, none of my baking sheets will fit this mat. I used to use a heavy cutting board with a damp towel to prevent slipping, but the wood surface wasn't smooth enough for my stickier doughs, it was too small, and it was difficult to clean. This mat is very easy to clean and nonstick, but I wish it was a little heavier weight to prevent wrinkling or lifting up when using sticky doughs or my bench scraper. It will lift up if you do not keep it pressed down while scraping. I dampen the counter underneath the mat to prevent it from slipping. It doesn't hold any wrinkles or rolled-up clothing, which is a plus. It's in an up-and-down shape, so it's very easy to flatten. Overall, this is still a step up from my cutting board setup, and I'm sure I'll get used to holding it down when using my scraper.
This mat was purchased to be used as a craft mat. My sewing pad, which has printed measurements, is visible beneath it because it is sheer enough. It's a good size, and I don't have to move it for another project; ink and glue wipe off easily; and it provides a good stamping surface when it's difficult to get a perfect stamp using a block on a hard surface. For my craft table, this was an excellent purchase.
