It seems they are made of carbon steel, and they must have been made in the late 1950s, at the most. Despite its hardness, it isn't as brittle as steel.
Selected User Reviews For Machinist's Thin Parallel Bar Set - 10 Pair 1/8" X 6"
I measured it and might add that I am pleased with the result.
On the business side, parallelism is within a few tenths, as well as dimensional variation (height). It's on the right side of where I needed it for my intended use, which was general setup on mill, lathe, shaper, drill press etc. The reason for this is that he already has a grinder and can get the dead nuts himself if he needs to. Although they have been heated, they do not seem to be all that hard. However, I did notice a few pairs are warped by a few thousandths of an inch on the non-heated pairs. An example of a critical surface would be the two holes drilled in the same side. They were never intended to be used on this kind of project In the event that you wish to straighten them up, you might do so. Though the box is made of plastic, it is not nearly as durable as the set we have at the office. I find the value of the set to be astounding. might have been able to make my own set, but the material itself would cost me more than $34 alone, not to mention the time spent on machining, heat treating, and.
No, they're not Starretts or anything like that, but they're incredible value at 10% of Starrett prices and they're fine for general machine work as well. A couple of them needed a very light clean touch to get them dead on from a machinist's hand stone, but mostly they measured up well and were within specifications. You can get them exactly right with a granite plate or with good accuracy even with a little error if you have the granite plate and measure them properly. As long as you don't take on crazy aerospace stuff, out of the box, they are good enough for machining jobs in your home shop. As long as you don't take on crazy aerospace work, they are plenty good enough for general machine shops as well. There is something I really love about these something they are cheap, work well for 99% of jobs, and I can afford to keep the nice expensive super precision set aside for those jobs that call for a bit more.
I ordered three sets of these parallels. One set is missing one parallel (5/8").
Whenever I clamp my milling projects with these parallels, it is a huge help. It is almost impossible for me to work with my mill without using these. The price of these boots was probably around $40 when I purchased them, but I find them well worth it. At the time I got them, they were covered in paper and covered in "dragon fat". With the help of some WD40 and an old shop towel, I cleaned up these parallels and they came out really nicely. I would recommend this book highly.
However, the case did not go well. A failure to latch has occurred after the case has been opened once. Although they did a good job with the parallels, they could have done a better job with the A set I still have is made of plastic, but the latch on the case is made of metal. This set of parallels will probably be moved there, or I will probably get a better (empty) one for it. It may be more advantageous to use a metal latch or better quality plastic in the case. The poor design and quality of the case caused the one star to be removed.
This is junk. From traveling over from China, the parts are partly rusted. If they were parallel, I would be happy to clean them up and use them. The problem is that the rub is in the details. There were two parallel lines of the same size that were not exactly the same size. It was even evident that they were not the same size. Measurement of one of the 1/2" parallels. I've got 4999 on the other side. Other than that, there On one end is 5002 and on the other is The number 4993 is on the other hand. There is a real difference between getting what you pay for and not getting it. I'm a little disappointed since some of the products I have received have been very.
Parallel set of good quality. I know it isn't the greatest in the world, but I accept it for its quality. The edges are sharp and parallel, but the grind is inconsistent on the sides, and they are accurate, but not parallel. The price is really good and I'm very happy with them.
Well it wasn't until I checked the box label that I realized I was going to give this a three star rating. There is a statement that reads Set of Thin Parallel Bars for Machinists. There is also a label that It is a parallel set of precision figures. On the first point, I know quite a few Machinists and none of them would consider using them. As for Precision parallels, they are not the same. It is possible to put two parallels together and they will adhere to each other so hard that you have to separate them. Yes, these parallels will do for my purposes with some arduous labor to solve the defects, but keep in mind the preceding statement. The labels on most products contain a lot of incorrect information.
