Is there a protective case? I expected a protective box or case of some sort, given the price and the need to keep a machinist's straightedge "perfect," so I made my own, but I didn't expect to spend that much time and money on it

Arrived in a shipping box, loosely packed in air cushion bags; That was not to be expected from such a delicate tool. Although they appear to be in good condition, they could have been bent during shipping due to the lack of adequate protection. Other than that, everything was fine, and the package arrived on time.

An edge that is perfectly straight

I don't know what else to say except that it's a straight edge, exactly as described. The straight edge was very heavy, and the packaging was minimal, which was a disappointment given that this is a precision instrument.

It was supposed to have a nice smooth finish, so I was expecting that

This has a dreadful finish to it. I was expecting a nice smooth finish, but the cutting head has left deep grooves all over it. One corner has been dinged and pushed up, and the edges are slightly burred.
