They appear to be the same, in my opinion.
I'm guessing it's made in the United States because the packaging doesn't say. Starrett claims to have six factories in the United States, as well as factories in China, Brazil, and Scotland, according to their website.
Selected User Reviews For Starrett S579GZ Self Centering Telescoping Gauge With 2 Telescoping Arms Set, 5/16" - 2-1/8" Range, 2-3/8" Handle Length (4 Pieces)
The first set I ordered, the smallest gauge, did not fully deploy, so I received a replacement. When I received the replacement, I opened the box to find the spring and one of the smallest gauge's ends! I adore Starrett products and sell a lot of them in my shop, but this is insane. I read the reviews for the Brown and Sharpe and Mitutoyo, and they all state that the quality is poor. I don't care about the price, and they don't have to be made of gold; all they have to do is work. They won't send a replacement to a replacement, so I'll have to wait for a refund until they receive it, and I need to make parts in the meantime. Starrett. not cool.
Starrett tools are well-known for their high quality, and customers are willing to pay a premium for them. I own a number of Starrett tools and believe their cost is reasonable. However, my initial impression of these gauges was different, and if you have the chance, you should compare them to others in your possession; despite this, the telescoping mechanism works well. There is no requirement to bind. If you're not sure how to do it properly, read this: Tighten the gauge slightly while holding it at an angle, rotate the diameter once, extract, and measure with a mic or caliper.
Check out Adam Booth's videos on how to use these (he's Abom79 on YouTube) for more information. br>I use Adam's method and get consistent results to the thousandth of a millimeter every time; I imagine that if I had the skills to work in tenths, these gauges would not be a hindrance.
I didn't expect a Starrett to be as smooth as this. But it appears to be working.
It was ideal for use as a CNC machinist and for performing inspections.
Very good quality. Definitely superior to the low-cost imports. Both are present in my possession. It's well worth the extra money.
Use these on a daily basis; they are of excellent quality and feel great.
It was only a matter of adding a few drops of oil. This is a fantastic resource.
