Selected User Reviews For SHARS 5/16"-6" TELESCOPING GAGE Set Premium Series 303-4106 P\
I had been using a cheaper set for a few years that cost around $20, but I needed another set to keep on my service truck. I chose this set for nearly twice the price because it was advertised as "premium," and some of the Shars tools are quite good. I'm a little disappointed with the quality because some of these have a rough movement of the sliding plungers, more so than any of the ones in my old "cheap" set. I'm thinking of contacting Shars directly to see if they'd be willing to exchange at least the rough ones. I kind of wish I'd just spent the extra cash on the Mititoyo set and been done with it now.
I'm not sure if this qualifies as premium. I should have contacted Shars first before writing this review, but this is what I got. Shars are a favorite of mine. a good group of people, in general fantastic items This one is in the good/okay range. At this price point, no one should expect top-notch telescoping gauges, so be prepared to do some minor tweaking. or put up with a few minor annoyances while using it. That is especially true of the cheapest versions, which are far superior in some ways but still require improvement (by you, if not by China). The finish is nice, though one of them had some spotting, and the knurls are clean and grippy enough while remaining flat. Everything is straight, the threads are well cut, and the ends are nicely polished (a big plus), there's a decent spring inside, and it's all nice and oily. Some of mine run smoothly, while others are a little gritty but serviceable, and the "E" in the 3" range, which is perhaps the most important to me, is terrible. I'll see what I can do with some needle files and stones to help - In most cases, this is ideal - I'm not going to bother Shars about getting a replacement unless it's absolutely necessary. Overall, these are worthwhile purchases, and it's clear that an effort was made to provide something better than the junk-filled alternatives. Expect to deal with some touch-and-go stuff that's out there, but expect to deal with some touch-and-go stuff as well. The case is nice, though it is a little fiddly to open due to the fact that each clip inside is reversed (one goes up, one goes down). If you aren't aware of this, it can be frustrating and easy to break. I'd gladly pay a few dollars more for a more assured "premium" set of these instead of having to spend the larger coins on other brands. The majority of the other Shars products I've seen or used have been excellent. br>br>Update: I contacted Shars, and they were gracious enough to send a replacement for the gitchy one at no charge. I suggested that I return the old one to them, but they declined. The replacement goes on without a hitch, as it should. Thank you very much.
