I needed a set of hole gauges for a project, and I'd heard good things about Fowler tools and equipment, so I was hoping these would be good as well. These do not impress me in the least. The plastic holder had already started to tear when it was delivered. Although the bag does not say "Fowler," I suspected these were knockoffs until I noticed the Fowler log etched on the tool. The tool's action isn't particularly smooth, making precision fitting difficult. The 0. is in its original packaging. 125"- The "200" tool was fully inserted into the tube. The gauge refused to flex back into its smaller position at first. AND THESE INCLUDE LEAD. Given that we are in 2013, this is completely absurd. I wouldn't order them again now that I have them. I'm thinking about taking legal action against the seller to get these items returned. Overall, it was not worth my money; I should have bought a cheap set from McMaster Carr or spent the money on a high-quality set from Starrett or Mitutoyo.
I was very pleased with the T gauges that I purchased from Fowler. These small hole gauges, on the other hand, are a different story. I didn't want to spend the money on a starret, but these aren't much better than the cheap China ones that are available for much less. br>The issue I had with this was that the screw for tightening and loosening the gauge felt very rough, and when I disassembled it, I discovered rust on all of the threads. Because it was light, I used some WD-40 to fix it. They're a little smoother, but not by much. My other gripe is that the center spindle spreader on the two largest gauges is concentric with the outside metal spreaders from which you get your reading. The metal expanding on the two smallest hole gauges, however, appears to be over bent and does not match the contour of the middle spindle. br>It has no bearing on how they are used. I can still get accurate readings from all of the gauges, but I was hoping for a little more from Fowler.
I haven't used a tool like this in a long time. This dates back to my manufacturing days in the 1980s. While I did use the Starrett top at the time, this one works just as well for measuring small holes like those found on suction roll shells. Accurate measurement necessitates a great deal of practice because it requires a great deal of precise feel. br>Perfect addition to our roll-service toolkit.
The order was processed and shipped in a timely manner. All instructions were included with the gauge set, which was brand new. For dimensional inspections of small openings, I would suggest this tool to Quality Control inspectors.
