For a natural gas heating unit, I place mine on the chimney. As a result, there hasn't been any creosote buildup on my property. However, because I have another chimney (with a different cap), I can offer a couple of creosote tips:
1. Invest in a creosote-reducing log. They don't have a pleasant odor, but they are extremely beneficial.
2. Green wood should not be burned. Allow it to age for a while; I usually only burn wood that has been chopped the previous year.
3. Get a wire chimney sweep brush that is the right size. Take care! ) and thread it through the pipe with a long handle (which you must also purchase). These are available at Lowe's, Home Depot, and other similar stores.
If you're talking about a round flue pipe with a 44-inch circumference, the diameter would be 14 inches. (A cap with a diameter of 14 inches would be required.)
Yes, it should fit over clay if the outside diameter of your clay pipe is just under 8 inches, but I don't believe it was designed to go over clay. I hope this has been of assistance.

So far, the chimney cap has been a big hit with me. The fit was perfect for my 8" Metalbestos pipe, and the tight friction fit should hold up well in the strong winds we have here. Sparks are prevented by the large opening, and birds are prevented from entering the chimney, which they do every fall. Updated on January 21, 2018: We've had some sustained winds here recently, and the cap has held up well. There hasn't been any down draft yet, and I don't think there will be any soon. I'm bumping it up to five stars from four.
It's very simple to install and fits easily into an 8" chimney pipe, but it fills up with creosote far too quickly after only a few uses. Maybe it's because we live in a colder part of the country (NE Washington) - In other climates, it might be fine - however, after about two years, After 3 weeks of use during the colder months, it clogs up completely and smoke fills the house. It's been a year and a half since we got it, and I finally got up on the roof and removed it from the chimney. For my purposes, I'll be looking for a rain cap that has less of a grill.
When the Amazon delivery guy slammed into my garage, I'm guessing my old one shifted. I'm sure it wasn't the time the Amazon delivery person nearly killed my dog or the time the driver was caught on camera making derogatory remarks about my request that he not pull into the driveway.
This was a great replacement for the old cap that came with our house when we moved in. It would not fit into my 8" flue in its current state. We purchased a $20 crimping hand tool from Lowe's and promptly returned it after finishing the project. It's easy to fit the cap into your chimney once the bottom is crimped. The overall quality and sturdiness have left me very impressed. It appears to be well constructed and will last a long time.
It's installed, we've had a couple of wind storms, and it's still in place. If it lasts more than one season, I'll be very happy.
The chimney cap appears to be in excellent condition. It easily slid into the chimney pipe, and I'm using it on an outdoor boiler with no creosote buildup. It shields you from the rain well. While I continue to use the furnace, it will provide adequate protection from birds entering the furnace during the summer.
This was a fantastic alternative to the standard cap. The only thing to keep in mind is that you must correctly measure your flue. I have an 8" flue and ordered an 8" cap, but it appears that I should have ordered a smaller size to ensure proper fit. To make it work, I had to make a few changes, but it's fantastic.
I live in a very windy area with a lot of trees. It's been up for a few months now. and it's performing admirably. I live in a very windy area and have had no problems with it; it has also performed admirably during some severe rainstorms. I had it installed by my handyman/roofer while he was replacing my roof, so I have no idea how simple or difficult it was to put in.
