Questions & Answers

Is this cap suitable for use with an "air-conditioned" vehicle? chimney that has been "cooled" ?

All I have to say is that I have a triple-A personality. It's a wall metal chimney that works great and has outlasted the previous two I purchased.

Is this unit up to code in California (I believe the mesh is 5/8")? Is it possible to add a screen if it isn't already there?

As California codes may differ, I'd check with your local zoning department to be sure, but I believe 5/8 and up is fine. Our weather shield cap also comes with a removable lid for cleaning and a 3/4" removable screen. Stainless steel is a type of metal.

Made in the United States of America (USA) or from the following countries: china? It's impossible to be both at the same time. ?

The caps, I believe, are imported in parts from China and assembled and welded in New York. It's made of 304 stainless steel, which is sometimes shipped from China and other times from New York City.

How long is the "shaft" that goes through the chimney pipe?

Since it's up on the chimney, I'm not sure how long it is, but it's at least four feet long. 6 appears to be the correct number; I had no issues with it. You can always use an extension piece if your pipe doesn't reach far enough.

After two years, the product was no longer viable
3/5

There is no such thing as a "Pressure Fit. " UPDATE: After two years of failure, I've given up! br>I just spent (at least) another $1000 on this chimney cap. The top of the structure failed due to weld failure, and the top fell off. As a result of the leak, the chimney and ceiling have been damaged. Purchases should be avoided. br>br>I was under the impression that "pressure fit" meant that it would slide on snugly enough to stay put. This isn't the case at all. I wasn't worried about it blowing away, but if you don't secure it with something creative, it will rattle in the wind. To support it, I simply inserted machine screws into the existing holes on the outer sleeve. With the way the new vent sits around the old pipe, drilling into it isn't practical, so it would be great (and reasonable) if it came with a way to secure the cap other than gravity. On the plus side, it appears to be of good quality and is reasonably priced. br>br>Edit: It will vanish in a thunderstorm if you do not secure it with screws. I used machine screws to hold it in place instead of drilling into the cap itself, and I just used pressure to keep it in place. The cap was in the yard of a neighbor after our first big storm, so I had to re-order it. It was fastened with screws drilled into the cap, and it hasn't moved since. This type of modification, in my opinion, is too much to ask of customers, especially if you advertise otherwise.

However, this does not prevent all embers from escaping into an outdoor fire pit
4/5

This was purchased to go on top of an outdoor fireplace known as a Chiminea. The opening in the top of my Chiminea is about 6 1/2" in diameter, so I was able to place this on top and use it as an ember suppressor when I'm burning wood outside and enjoying a nice evening by the fire. This sits atop and, all things considered, looks pretty nice. The reason for the one-star deduction is that I wish the top vents had a wire mesh of some sort to keep the embers from escaping. Watching embers fly away can make a man nervous, especially if he lives in Southern California, where wildfires are always a concern. As a result, I have a garden hose nearby that I can turn on at any time to put out any fire that may start as a result of my using the outdoor fireplace I have. I did notice that the top is held on by four bolts/nuts, and I may modify it myself one day soon to insert my own mesh to prevent more embers from escaping. Apart from that, I'm very happy with the product and the speed with which it was delivered to me.

What happened to all of my money? I needed to replace an existing cap from the 1980s that was missing the top and letting rain into the chimney, so I went with this one because it was better quality than the $50 HD special that everyone seems to have
3/5

The new cap was simple to install, requiring only that it be inserted into the chimney. I have to say, though, that I'm not sure where my $80 went because this thing isn't worth $80. It's a flimsy, thin metal with tiny welds. I'm not holding my breath that it'll stay up there for more than a year or two. However, there were few choices for an eight-inch chimney, and this one at least looks good. br>br>It's also worth noting how bad the packaging was. The staples that held the top together had come loose, and the packing tape was not holding it together very well. The cap itself was also slightly smashed on one side, as if a heavier box had been placed on top at some point. Both of these factors have no bearing on my overall rating; however, they are worth noting. I'm not concerned about the smashed side because it's only a minor flaw that won't be noticeable unless you get right up to the cap, which won't be a problem.

Built very well and, I believe, safer than most, this solid built, medium weight, solid stainless steel Chimney Cap will keep you on top of your chimney needs
5/5

I have a standard 6 inch single wall stove pipe, and the cap slides on snugly, so I don't see how it could blow off or detach in any weather. The side of the cap has a slit in it that is fastened at the top rather than the bottom, allowing the bottom to expand easily over the 6 inch single wall type. I'm really impressed with the design and construction; the large diameter should aid airflow, and the shorter length should keep down draft to a bare minimum. You can clean your existing pipe or liner by removing the bolts from the top portion of the cap with a wrench if you're only doing a one-time install. I think it's a little pricey, but I also think it could easily last 20 years for the average home owner.

Installing it was a breeze
5/5

Arrive as soon as possible. It arrived in good condition and was simple to set up. The 6" cap was easy to install on DuraVent triple wall 6" stainless pipe that I purchased. Other people had issues with the sizing, according to other reviews I read. There's nothing to worry about. Due to the wire mesh type construction, the original cap, a DuraVent stainless cap, became clogged with ash and soot and prevented the stove from venting properly. I'm hoping that this never-ending cap will stay clear for a while longer. Because I live in the mountains, I use the stove almost every day during the winter months. After a year of use, I'll update my review.

It has been designed to withstand a nuclear attack
5/5

During the winter, the lid to the cover of my chimney must have blown off, and I was unable to locate it in the woods. I needed one that would fit a 6" diameter chimney and was of higher quality than the cheap one that had broken down after a few years. This item was built to withstand a nuclear explosion. Excellent quality, far better than anything I've seen before. The design is simple, and it fits perfectly into the existing 6" diameter chimney pipe, almost as if it were made to order. Although I hope that I will not need to replace the chimney top due to wind sheer in the future, if I do, there is no doubt that I will purchase another one of these well-made chimney tops. Even though it fits snugly, I'm thinking I should probably go back up on the roof and secure it to the chimney with a few sheet metal screws as I type this.
