The hum won't kill you if you're not too sick of it. This is an upgrade from my cheapo preamp which I bought after doing some research. It had never occurred to me how much distortion was coming through and how much clarity was being lost before. The mani clarified things up, and I was delighted with the result. I regret to inform you, however, that I cannot recommend this preamp to all My situation is, unfortunately, similar to that of many others. I could not look away from the hum it was too loud. It sounded great to me, so I tried it, but it was way too irritating for me. Nothing I tried made a difference, so I looked up solutions to the issue. This preamp is very solidly built, and its sound quality is far beyond the price point. I have tested more phono preamps than I can count and this is by far the best. The majority of the world will find this to be good enough for their needs.
