Questions & Answers

Is there a particular brand of sand and gravel that should go inside these bags, as well as a place where I can get them? I appreciate it! ?

Pea gravel is available in large bags from the hardware store and is the kind I use.

Is the sand in these bags provided or am I required to find it on ?

The wheels do not come with sand, but it can be purchased for a fraction of the cost at your local Home Depot or Lowe's. Each bag is about $3, and if I'm not mistaken it fills 3 coolers with 15 lbs of candy. Rather than allowing the sand to get wet when it was dipped in water, I used zip lock freezer bags inside to ensure there was no leakage. Having purchased a few of these, I can say that they work really well. With double zipper action, an enclosure is created that is solid. Your best friend is the zip lock bag.

How big is the zip lock bag you used, a quart or a ?

The bags are sealed with tape in quart size.

As a precaution, I do not use sand (in case I break them). Can you suggest anything else?

is a great substitute for sand and reduces spillage to a significant extent.

A few caveats apply
4/5

Sand is held in them and they weight things down. In the first place, I would like to say that I am happy with my In the past, I have used them as counterweights on a boom and to stabilize the main shaft of a light stand. As far as I was concerned, these meet my needs and are what I expected for the price. Feeling-wise, they are As far as I am concerned, the bag and webbing are adequate for what I need. There are some issues with the zips, and I am sure that some usage patterns would break them quickly, as others have stated. Although the second zip is not necessary for my use, it could add a little more security to some people. I am going to start by stating what I did with them in use. Since I am willing to take two precautions in order to reduce the risk of spilling sand everywhere, I mitigated those risks both The first consideration is that almost all of the weight was reduced to (clean/sedimented) pea gravel. This method costs about $1 per lb and is less likely to leak through seams, etc. Second, the gravel is placed in quart Ziploc bags (3 lbs each). I feel safe using these sand bags virtually anywhere because the gravel in the ziplocks is protected. Those bags provide 12 lb of weight (2 x 3 lb bags per side) to support my stands and to serve as counterweights for my boom arm. In fact, I haven't tried just draping them over the legs of the stand, but rather attached them in a variety of ways using the handles (to ensure they don't Their success has been largely due to their efforts towards this goal. After reading some of the negative reviews, I would like to respond to a few criticisms I have A majority of the risks associated with sand leakage are mitigated by the methods described above. It is quite unfair to say that these are no better than a zip-lock bag. These are far more versatile and they have handles, so I'd feel far more comfortable laying them over the leg of a stand It feels like the zips are very weak and may prove to be damaging if you keep filling and empties them constantly. However, if you are going to "fill once, use many", then it may not be an issue for you. One more thing for those complaining these do not contain sand once these are filled they weigh slightly over 50 pounds each Shipping is not very convenient for this size. Sand or any other filling material is very cheap, so you probably should obtain it locally rather than order. The liners do what I expect them to do. If, however, you are concerned with long term durability when repeatedly filled or used without a liner, perhaps you should In general, as long as you line the innards and leave the fluid inside, you should.

I found this to be a great value for money
5/5

It's becoming ridiculous to have to rent sandbags for $5-$10 every time I fly to a job A day out of town costs $10 per person. Adding it all up takes no time at all. These are usually needed in packs of three, so I bought a pack. If i rent for 3 days for 3 sandbags at $5 a day for 25 shoots a year, even for 4 days per year, that is over $1000 a year. As you can see, I didn't fill these in. either fill them with play sand ($7) from home depot upon arrival in town on my travel day, or have my assistant fill them with landscaping rocks from the shoot location exterior the first morning. I fly almost no more than I have to, and almost no additional luggage weight will be added. It is very simple to dump them back out before packing for the airport.

These have held up remarkably well considering they are not designed for as much opening and closing as I do. I plan on buying two more packs to give to assistants I use regularly in certain cities so they can fill them and give them to me. It doesn't matter if I use them twice and they take them away, I am still in the black on the fee I would have paid.

Consume them as you would any other item
3/5

The four sets of outdoor microphone tripods I use are held by 12 sandbags. I have had to replace all the sandbags at least twice (if not more) in the last five years. At about $4 a piece, they are not costly. Since they are consumables, I consider them as such. I handle the fabrics with care because they are thin and not very strong. If I drop a camera on a tripod leg or on something that has sharp edges or corners, I try to avoid doing it. You can put seven to eight pounds of dry play sand in a 1 gallon freezer bag for each side of the sand. Make sure the sand is double bagged to ensure punctures are not caused. A piece of gaffer tape can be used to tape up small holes or slashes in the outside of the bag. In order to replace it, I take out the freeze bags and place it in a new sandbag when the fabric begins to yellow from exposure to UV. As opposed to loose sand or gravel, it is a lot easier to handle. Just remember that these sandbags are inexpensive. It is not a commercial, professional, or heavy duty bag (despite whatever it says in the description). SANDBAGSITE sells higher quality sandbags, but they will cost you much more than the ones found elsewhere. Many vendors in Amazon sell sandbags that look the same as the one you are holding (with blue and black striping). It has been awhile since I've tried any of them. My last set from this vendor broke pretty soon after I got it. As the stitch holding the handle loosens and tears away from the bag, the handle is completely detached from the Another reviewer's photos are shown below. The mileage may vary for each individual.

The work is going well
5/5

When I filled them with my clothes, the zippers on all 4 bags were in the right direction and functional. Fortunately, the stitching on the handles has been holding up well and is no longer showing signs of failure at the moment. There are 2 x 20 lb bags of gravel in each, so it may fit 22 lbs, but the strain would be tough on any bolts or rivets holding your stand legs, and it would wear them out faster. It is darker than the photo shows, which I find to be a plus, but I don't think it makes much of a difference since I always order the cheapest color.

I have used it for a year and it is A very durable material
5/5

While filming and shooting video, I like to use my tripod's tilting center column to get a top down presentation of my desk. Unfortunately, if the center column of a tripod is tilted, it messes up the center of gravity on the tripod, so With these weight bags I can counteract that and bring back the center of gravity so my tripod won't tip over when my camera is attached to For me, it was easier to not use sand in these bags but to use a few 5 lb dumbbells instead ().
