On my 2004 Dodge Ram, I had the same issue as you. I bought it in December quickly and was able to check my oil level without any issues. When I tried to open the hood today, my hood nearly fell on me. After being installed less than a year ago, I did not expect that they would fail after so short a time.
No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't compress it. I had considered it for a while and decided to give it a go, fortunately it was easy to set up. Having both shocks installed, there was a little extra pressure closing the hood with both, but once mostly down it closed well. Maybe stiffer than needed, once one shock was replaced the hood stayed up, and held the hood up after completely removing the other shock. Why do they need plastic bubble wrap on just a few pieces of steel in a small box when there is no need for it? There's a little bit too much packaging, so I'm going to give them a ding. In this case, it will be time to see how long they last. The original ones on the truck lasted 15 years and OEM replacements cost 3 times as much, so even if they only last 5 years, they are worth it, given how easy they are.
I installed it in less than ten minutes on a 2004 Dodge Ram. In order to remove the hood, I supported it with a pole, and used a small flat tip screwdriver to remove the holding clips at the hood end. After removing the holding clips from the fender, remove the clamps from the wing as well. With a press of a button, I installed the new strut (piston up, chrome shaft down)on the hood end. There was almost no way for the hood to move while it was still being held with the stick, so the end of the strut was almost at the correct position A new side was installed on each side. It has now been made so that the hood will stay up without the danger of disappearing on my I am looking forward to seeing how long they last!.
Exactly the right amount of balance. Despite having ordered them two days earlier, the struts arrived even faster than I had expected. I replaced them as soon as possible. Although there are no instructions, one can figure out how to install them without too much difficulty. At the end of each retainer clip there is a ball that snaps into the ball attached to the hood and The clips from the old pair were removed with a small punch and a hammer, which allowed me to remove the struts. A small screwdriver that could fit in the slot would also do the trick. As part of the process I propped the hood as high as it would go while still using the old struts, and opened both ends up with a small tap while being careful not to damage the piston and rod ends. Since the hood came already installed, the end you attach last must be aligned with the ball that pops into it. This proved to be an easy task since it was already in the correct position. I have now achieved a pretty good balance on the hood of my 2004 Dodge RAM. By now, it doesn't drop anymore, but instead moves up by itself. When I close it near the latch the weight of the hood lowers the hood when I get to the end of travel. I am not confident about the plastic or nylon rod ends and hope they will hold up as long as the entire unit, but at least it is off to a good start. I am sure it will leak some gas over time, but there is certainly plenty of lift for now. I think it is time for a change of oil.
To open the end clips, you need a small screwdriver with a flat blade. With my stick in place and tool in hand, it took me less than 2 minutes to replace both struts. These struts don't just hold the hood open, instead, they push the hood open. This is a great company. The cost of the OEM struts is almost 1/3 as much.
After I had swapped out my old ones for the new ones, it only took me two minutes to install them. I found this method to be very effective. In the process of installing them, I was surprised that once I put the first one in, before moving to the other side, that it felt so stiff that I wondered if I had made a mistake. After falling from the old struts, it took me a second to figure out how much pressure I needed to apply to the hood to close it. The meeting didn't differ from those that occur every day.
I have been looking for the solution to replace my hood lift supports for awhile. My friend replaced his cheaply and easily, and I have no idea how difficult it is to do. Searching on Amazon for shocks brought me to Amazon. com. The reviews for this company seemed so good, so I honestly thought that the company offered free items to obtain good reviews, yet I decided to order them anyhow. The company did not offer free gifts in exchange for reviews! I was amazed at how easy it was to install the shocks. I think it took me 4 minutes to complete. I've tried them out and they work great so far. Since I installed them about 3 weeks ago, I have not experienced any problems. As soon as I can comment on longevity, I will come back and update this. For now, I am so happy a long time is coming! It's no longer dangerous to work on my truck with a head injury!.
A few years ago, one of my hood lifts broke, which is why I mounted a piece of pvc pipe to one of the lifts because I think it's crazy that in an auto part store, you'd have to pay $26 for a single $16 seems to be the going rate for these. The two were 89 dollars each and I am glad I purchased them. It was quick to ship, easy to install with just a small screwdriver and they work wonders. There are only a couple of cons I can think of People without instructions might not be able to find anything they need. The products are not manufactured in the United States.
