I bought this for my two-year-old's second birthday because she had begun to show an interest in playing with similar items, so I thought I'd give it a try. But I think a three-year-old would enjoy it more. It's suitable for children aged 2 and up as long as you're willing to play with the playdoh and the set with them. Although the dough that comes with this set is terrible, I would recommend getting playdoh:

I'd suggest calling Melissa and Doug's customer service line for more information, but when my kids were younger, I found that letting it dry/harden and then vacuuming it up worked best. I'm not sure about the upholstery because I've never had that issue before.

I purchased this kit for our son to work on wrist stability and functional play, as he currently has a laundry list of diagnoses associated with global developmental delays. We're using it right now as part of a non-profit organization. The wrist stability is the main thing I'm hoping to get out of it, as it's crucial for developing a tripod grip with writing utensils. For three reasons, I chose this set over others: 1) Two of the rolling pin style rollers have designs that they will imprint into the clay, which I suspected/hoped would be more motivating for our little man; 2) one of the rollers is a one-time use roller, which I suspected/hoped would be more motivating for our little man. 3) The wooden blocks with imprint shapes I felt would be easier for him to grasp than traditional cookie cutters and would give him something to do to modify the clay faster from a skills standpoint, which I thought would be more motivating. br>br>I love that I was correct on all three of them, because yesterday was one of those days with our little guy serving me my butt in a wheelbarrow, and this morning when we tried to walk in a different direction than his sister's school wasn't much better, and I was desperate to see something succeed. br>br>As you can see from the manufacturer's photo, these play clay canisters are quite small. With this kit, there's just enough to get by. It did appear to me to be more appealing than play do at first, but it didn't stick to the table any more than play do did, and I had no trouble cleaning up after we finished. Only a very small amount of the clay product adhered to the wood block we were using; none of it adhered to the rollers, which appeared to have a higher gloss varnish/sealer on them, making them slightly less sticky. And I respectfully disagree with another reviewer who claims that plastic play do toys are superior because we have a full set of those and have had them since our daughter was a toddler. And believe me when I say that it doesn't matter what they're made of; if play clay dries in them, they're a pain to clean out. However, if you're trying to chip out dried play clay, plastic is sometimes easier to break than wood. br>br>I did notice that a small amount of paint had leaked into the clay from the red block we were using, but upon closer inspection, it appeared to be some loose painted wood dust left over from manufacturing, as there was no chipped paint on our block. However, I imagine that the paint would chip over time as a result of use and would end up in the clay. But, since anything, including pet hair, can do that, I'm not too concerned about it. br>br>Our 5-year-old son has large hands for his age. He has no trouble grasping the one-handed roller, but the other rollers require more fine motor skills because he can't wrap his hands all the way around the grippers and must rely on his finger tips. Which I believe is also beneficial. So, if you're buying it for an older or larger pre-schooler or kindergartener, keep that in mind. They might prefer something with more room for their hands to grip. But, because he has fine motor needs as well, I'm cool with it. I also think the shapes on the lid are really cool, so once he's comfortable with the blocks, I'll move on to those. In conclusion, I believe this is an excellent product.
The fact that the set included a variety of tools was appealing to me. However, when I received it, I discovered that the wooden stamps were not particularly well made - I wouldn't expect such a rough and sloppy finish from a toy for small children; in fact, I'm afraid to give some of the pieces to my child in case they splinter and injure him. br>While the play doh itself was individually sealed, one or two colors didn't seem as fresh as the others. I've seen Melissa and Doug products for sale all over, but this is the first time I've bought one. I'm not impressed, and I'm not confident enough in the quality and safety of their product to want to try any of their other toys.
So five out of five. The tools are well-made and attractive, and the kit's price is very reasonable - As a result, I rated it with a five-star rating. The playdough isn't great, but I understand that it's a way to make sure the kit works right away, and perhaps the expectation is that you'll get better playdough from another manufacturer? My toddler and I decided to make some playdough. The first batch (from the My Heavenly Recipes blog, which is normally excellent) was a disaster, while the second batch (from the Artful Parent blog) was fantastic. This one is far superior to any we've ever purchased.
This was a present for my 2-year-old son. I wasn't sure he'd like the rolling pins, but he absolutely does and has been using them on a daily basis! He always comes up to me and asks to play with his "pee-pee-pee-pee-pee-pee-pee-pee I was also pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the doh that came with the kit. I did buy him a multi-pack of cigarettes. Also available in a Play Doh pack. I'm glad he likes it because it was definitely worth the money! Melissa and Doug have a reputation for never letting their fans down.
Melissa is one of our favorite people. Products made by Doug! My daughter has become obsessed with play doh, and I've run out of new and exciting things to do with her. I introduced these molds and shapers, and I've had a lot of fun with them. She is three years old and can complete all of the tasks independently. She is enthralled by the various textures and shapes. I like how sturdy they feel; they're built to last. The only minor drawback is that you must clean them immediately after use; otherwise, the playdoh can get stuck in some of the texture pieces and be difficult to remove. But it's nothing that some hard work can't fix.
I'd read some negative reviews about this set, but it's one of our favorites. True, the dough included in the set looks a little sad - I haven't even bothered to open the containers yet because they are so small. We've been playing with it with play dough, and my toddler is so enamored with the tools that we've had to do it several times a day since I brought them out last week. The stamps may not excite an older child, but play dough stamps are fascinating to a two-year-old. He particularly enjoys cleaning them out with toothpicks and stacking them into a tower with play dough breaks. br>br>Even for adults, rolling pins are a lot of fun. They are, in fact, quite small, but they are the ideal size for small hands. Also popular is the cutter. We like that they're made of wood and don't appear to be as fragile as some of the tools I remember snapping in half when I was a kid! I bought this set as a Deal of the Day, so I'm not sure I'd pay full price for it, but we love it.
The greatest toy of all time! During her visit over the holidays, this kept my 19-month-old granddaughter occupied for several hours each day! Small and portable, the modeling dough cans are ideal for taking to restaurants. In this fantastic assortment, you will find everything you require. To press into the dough, use rolling pins and shape cubes. I also included some cookie cutters as a finishing touch.
