Questions & Answers

Is there anything else I need to get the pum to work, or is it already complete? I'd like to put it on a rain barrel. Is that possible?

Only the pump's body and working parts are included in this package: A pipe to reach the near bottom of your barrel, a foot valve with a particle screen, and possibly a reducer between the pump and pipe are all available on Amazon and at local home improvement stores.

How many feet of head will it pump, and what diameter pipe will it use?

I used 1 1/4 galv instead of the pump's rated 25 vertical feet. Approximately 24 feet of steel pipe was driven.

Can the handle be turned to 3 o'clock and the spout to 6 o'clock?

"As long as you keep in mind that it's 5 o'clock somewhere," says the narrator.

In the event of an emergency, would this type of pump work if it was connected to city water at the meter?

Because the water is usually stored in a tower or a tank up the side of a hill in most cities, the pressure in your water is caused by "gravity." Even if there is no power, the water will retain all of its gravity-based properties. As it travels down the pipes to your home, it creates pressure.

Pump is fantastic! The end result is fantastic
5/5

We drilled a well about 15 feet down, and the water level is only about 6 feet below, so it pumps well. The pump was instantly primed. During the Y2K craziness, I installed a lot of hand pumps, so I added a 1. Great little pump, and now we have a near endless water supply regardless of whether we have utilities. 25" brass check valve from a local hardware store ($20ish) right at ground level inside the brick base we made for it so it never loses prime.

Excellent pump, but the factory gaskets are in need of replacement
4/5

I purchased two of these for use at two different locations. They work fine, but Simmons should install better gaskets because both pumps lose prime after a few minutes. I had to spend $40 on a 1 1/4" brass valve to install under the pump and shut it off every time I use it so the water doesn't lose prime and fall back down 20 feet. When you install a valve, you can wait weeks before using the pump again, and the water will be ready to pump right away. There is no need to prime the pump; simply open the ball valve and pump; the water will stay up inside the pump. You might be able to use the replacement leather kit to help get rid of the bad non-sealing leather that comes standard with these pumps. One of the pumps also stopped working, and it was unable to lift water. The only issue with these systems is that the gasket does not make a tight seal, so I looked into it and discovered that the gasket cup only needed to be bent out slightly to create a tighter suction. Now it's working perfectly. So, instead of replacing the entire gasket, try bending the leather cup out with your fingers first. So far, it's been a great pump; just make sure you have the gasket kit on hand.

It's a lot of fun for both our garden and ourselves! This is fantastic
5/5

In order to keep water in our garden, we decided to construct a container. One was built by a friend and he showed me how to do it. I went out and bought everything I needed. After that, I looked on Amazon for this pump. I placed an order, received it, and put it in place. We fill the whiskey barrel's plastic bin with water and use the pump to fill a watering can (the container has a PVC pipe). We could fill a watering can with water from the hose, but this is a lot more fun and we don't have to drag the hose out. It adds a touch of whimsy to the garden, and we're very pleased with the results.

I'm guessing the one I got was put together on a Friday afternoon before a long weekend
3/5

When I took it out of the box, I discovered that the handle linkage had no cotter pins and was falling apart in my hands. To fix it, I rummaged around the cabin for a couple of rusted nails. It was put together on the well head, and the third or fourth handle was added. The entire top came off with a single pump. The top is secured by a tension bolt that also serves as a handle stop. It wouldn't stay tight, and I tried tightening it several times but it didn't work. In order for the bolt face to grab in the body of the pump, there must be a recess or detent. Piss- Design flaws! I'll fix it with a drill and some Locktite, but if this is a sign of the pump's continued poor quality, I believe I've wasted my money.

This is a fantastic pump for the money
5/5

I just finished installing this to bring water from the pond to the back porch of my remote cabin. It was simple to set up, and I connected it to a 1" water line with a foot valve at the pond's end. I used approximately 60 feet of rope. (I didn't bother with calculations and just hoped it would work. ) of tubing from the pond to under the cabin, with an overall rise of likely 12 feet at most. ) I soaked the pump for a day before installing it to make sure the leathers were nice and moist, and it worked great! I'm not sure why I haven't done this sooner. It was easy to prime it, but when I went to pump it again a week later, I had to pour a couple of gallons into the pump to get it re-primed. primed (but not to the point of being completely primed). To fix this, I'll install a check valve near the pump, but it's not a big deal if I don't. br>So far, I've been very pleased, and I'll let you know if there are any problems.

I recently drove a new well and used this pump to clear it off, and it pumped very easily with little to no effort
5/5

With a 6-foot well tip, I drove a 2-inch well down 20 feet. I only had to pull water up 8 feet from the ground to the pump, so it pumped very easily and with little effort. People who complain about how hard these pumps work are either trying to pull too much water or using a well tip that is too small. I drove it until I had 12 feet of water above the tips coupling, using a 6 foot well tip to get the best water saturation. br>br>This is very easy to prime and does not drain back. I let it sit for the night and it pumped perfectly with no loss of prime.

With the Seymour hand auger, I dug a well and
4/5

With the Seymour hand auger, I dug a well and topped it off with this pump. I couldn't figure out why it wasn't working at first. After removing the bolts on both sides, I discovered that the flapper was not properly aligned. After that, I just moved it over with my fingers and it was fine.

Simmons is still the best, having dug a shallow well for garden water as well as an emergency off-grid power source
5/5

the- water supply from the grid For superior performance, I trust Simmons the most. In the winter, I'll weatherize it, but it'll still work. Simmons has maintained a high level of manufacturing quality over the years, regardless of where it is produced. There are no peeling or chipping issues with this finish. This little pump is built to last. br>New Information: The lower leather valve was a little stiff and dry. I replaced it with a brand-new one I had on hand. To keep the leather soft and waterproof, it's probably a good idea to rub it with petroleum jelly. It won't harm or contaminate the water in any way.
