Investing in an excellent idea
5/5

This is an expensive tool that has been on my wish list for a long time. I have tried glass and wet sandpaper, diamond stones and Japanese water stones until it became affordable. However, I had a difficult time getting my tools sharp, and the process was messy, time consuming and This T-shirt was given to me by my wife A friend gave me eight for Christmas, and I love them. It is a bit of a learning curve, but with the right jig you can achieve perfect, razor sharp edges on anything. Even though some complain about how long it takes, once you get your initial bevel on a tool, it takes only a minute or so to restore the edge to its original condition. In the end, when I added up all the money I spent on stones and other sharpening supplies, I wish I had purchased one of these years When I searched the used market, I found they were rarely on sale and were often at a small discount, so I decided to make an investment that I knew would I would like to offer you some advice When oiling the leather wheel, be careful not to ruin it. It includes oil that helps condition the wheel, and a honing compound that can be added to finish it. As part of the instructions, it recommends maintaining a wet compound by adding oil continually. In this case, goop only forms a thick layer. As a rule of thumb, no oil should be added after the initial conditioning on the Tormek forums.

For now, I am a bit disappointed
5/5

There is a crack on the cover of mine, which looks like it was damaged in shipping. There was also no jig stop on it. The packaging was excellent and the box was factory sealed, so it obviously had to do with Tormek Quality Control. At $700 it is rather expensive and I would have enjoyed this more if it were a cheaper item. Any small fault will be acceptable as I expect nothing less than a 00 plus. In my contact with Tormek, I received an immediate response. The replacement cover and stop are the only items I wish to obtain instead of going through a return process. As soon as a decision is made, I'll update. A brief update It looks like Tormek has really made a difference! I am going to be sent a new one! A big 5 stars for them, for the machine and for the service You're the best!.

It is great machine
5/5

First I tried the Chef's Choice sharpener, which didn't work and did not allow you to vary the angle. Having sharpened just a few knives, I then went to a belt-style sharpener that ate through belts almost every time I sharpened them. Hence, I said that I was willing to spend the money on a Tormek T8 so I got it. I bought the rotating base, the cover, the Blackstone Silicon stone, and the blade sharpening jig kit for accessories. This is really impressive, I have to say. A wire-bound booklet includes this system as well as a description of the theory of sharpening (advantages and disadvantages of rotating the stone toward or away from you, for instance) as well as how to sharpen a wide range of items. Although there is a learning curve (as with everything), I started with a knife and axe that I didn't care about if I scratched them. This was fine--I didn't scratch them. My Buck knife was so sharp that it would easily cut through the edge of a piece of paper just under its own weight by just making 4 passes on each side. This comes with a marker that allows you to paint the bevel on a blade so that you can get the right contact between the bevel and The machine comes with a blade jig that lets you adjust the angle of a blade so that you can achieve the desired result. It comes with everything you I used it to sharpen an axe and a hunting knife before I felt ready to use it to sharpen my There is no doubt that the Tormek system is worth every cent. In order to ensure that my expensive knives have a mirror edge, I intend to get the Japanese Waterstone. Please accept my sincere thanks for reading this review.

Sharpening is great, but top quality is lacking in some 3 I really like the T-shirt I have only used this system for sharpening 8 times and it is by far the best
3/5

My only reason for giving it three stars is because a bolt or should I say a whole bunch of bolts broke due to a bursting nut After its first use, a thread piece holding the under bar that holds the tool in the square edge jig broke. I found it amusing that the bolt did not break when the tool was tightened When you loosen it to take out the tool, you broke it. The broken bolt was so tight in the under bar it was difficult to get it out, as it broke flush with the back of the bar, and it was secured with some sort of lock -- Compound that is tightly woven. My next step is to look for a new bolt that fits perfectly. Since the bolts of this system are so expensive, it seems like they should be of better quality. But, I guess nothing will be perfect. Additionally, the plastic side next to the leather honing wheel is soft enough that when the system runs longer than 30 minutes, it pops out and hits the wheel, which can make rubbing sounds. I would have made this part of the tool out of the same metallic material to avoid this problem.

It's a great tool, though
5/5

A remarkable job of sharpening is done by this product. The tool is costly, but it's a very useful one. Knives can be sharpened with it in an impressive way- They stay sharp all the time. So I no longer have to hide the one good knife I need (laboriously sharpened with a stone) only to have my wife find it and use it, dulling it in the process. After I sharpened the knives, they are still very While I have sharpened a few chisels, I have not sharpened a plane blade A chisel can be easily flattened on the side of the wheel by holding it up there. It turns out that I was able to change the apparent grit of the wheel from 220 to about 1000 using the abrader block that came with the tool, but I didn't realize that I could use the honing wheel to finely polish the entire bevel. (To accomplish this, use the included angle setup tool on the smaller honing wheel. the best way to remove the wire edge is to use a fine water or diamond stone after all the other steps have been completed. To make contact with the honing wheel at the contact point, I have used the honing wheel as suggested by the manual, however it is a bit difficult to get the back of the chisel angle towards the honing wheel. My mistake was to put a small reverse bevel on the back of a few chisels before I realized it. Even though they wish to shave, they would still do so. The included diamond wheel truing tool helps maintain precision after wheel truing. By doing so, the flat surface of the wheel is able to be trued to the bar on which all of the jigs that are part of the Tormek system are held. This is a cleverly designed system that sharpens a wide range of tools if you are willing to spend the money.

All the items in my shop are now as sharp as possible
5/5

This is a really easy to use program. As soon as I read the manual, I was on my way. So far, I've sharpened all of my tools. Despite having a bunch of water stones at my disposal, it is only this Tormek that ever produces a sharp edge. While I am aware that it is a costly item, I do not regret my purchase On the other hand, my wife expects that butter knives at that price would be sharp.
