Someone broke a bolt in the crankshaft of my used John Deere X500 riding mower, which I recently purchased. Then someone attempted to drill a hole in the broken bolt but misaligned it. The John Deere dealer determined that it couldn't be repaired and sold it to me for less than $800. I bought a Topec 35-inch flat screen television. With the Piece Screw Extractor and Drill Bit Set and a pilot bushing in place, I inserted the bushing and started the hole on center with the LH 1/4" drill bit. I then drilled a hole through the broken bolt with an 1/8" LH drill bit, then enlarged the hole with a 1/4 drill bit, slipped a 1/4' easy out in, and removed the broken bolt. I can't say enough good things about this set; it saved me a small fortune due to the heavy discount on the mower. The Kawasaki engine is in excellent condition, and the John Deere appears to be brand new.
Here's the verdict after how many months of sporadic use. What you pay for is exactly what you get. There are about 5 broken drill bits and 5 broken bolt extractors in my collection. br>This is, in my opinion, a waste of time. If you're only doing light mechanical work, this might suffice; however, if you're a full-time auto mechanic, I'd invest in something more powerful and heavy-duty.
I'm going to use it a lot more now! It paid for itself the first time I used it, which was about 20 minutes after it arrived at my door. In seconds, I was able to remove a stripped screw (which I had accidentally stripped just last week)! I used it on another screw a few days later, and it came out as well, but this time I had to drill in even deeper before it caught. This product appears to be of very high quality, and the case itself appears to be quite sturdy. My only criticism is that the case does not have a carrying handle. I'll definitely use this because I used to buy cheap screws and many of them are now stripped. Because this set comes in so many sizes, I don't think I'll ever need another one. They are labeled (though I can see how those might wear off on some of them), but there is also a guide in the case that can help you figure out what's what. If you've read any of my other reviews, you'll know that I share a lot of things with my father, so once the weather improves, we'll have a blast removing some of his stripped screws.
After doing some research online, I decided to order this extractor set because it seemed like you get a lot of bang for your buck. It fits my Dewalt drill perfectly, though I made the rookie mistake of drilling too fast the first couple of times, so it didn't work out as well as it could have. Fortunately, I reduced my drill speed after reading the instructions, and the extractor bits performed flawlessly. It's great that it's available in a variety of sizes to handle various screw types. I think I'll use it for some of my other home improvement projects.
There is a large selection of screw extractors in various sizes. I like how it comes in a carrying case that keeps everything organized. They have a good selection of tools that are well-made and long-lasting. When called upon, they perform admirably. Any handyman should get this kit, and you can thank me later.
I believe these extractors are comparable to most other brands; I have a set of blue brand extractors that cost significantly more and I can't tell the difference. The set includes two types of internal extractors, as well as left-handed drill bits. The external type is also included in the updated version. I bought them separately and they're also fantastic. I've used quite a few of these, and they do exactly what they claim to do. These will deliver if you use 50 ft lbs or more to break the fastener free. They'll break if you use more than that. Topec sent me replacements after I broke two of them. I was impressed by how simple it was to file a warranty claim for such a low-cost set. These won't remove every stuck nut or bolt; if it's rusted in place, you'll need to use a more aggressive method; however, if they can do the job, they save a lot of time and energy, and for the price, it's a no-brainer.
Despite the fact that you have a good product, it could be packaged much better for the money you spend on it. As an illustration: A thin layer of foam on the inside would help keep the pieces where they belong. When I opened the container on a flat, level surface, the bits were scattered all over the place. To keep the bits in proper position, I have to keep a rag inside. Moreover, greasy finger smudges had left dents in the container. This purchase has made a poor first impression. The overall quality of the bits will be determined by time and use.
Overall, I enjoy this set; it lives up to my expectations. I'm new to using extractors like these, so some instructions or guidance on which extractors to use in which situations would be helpful. br>I was able to successfully remove the broken stud, which was why I purchased the extractor set in the first place. It worked perfectly, and the stud came out with little difficulty. I'm glad I bought it, but I don't expect to use it very often.
