Yep. I have a 6-inch tap. It's 32, and it's capable of gripping even smaller objects.
These are, indeed, thread tapping tool holders. A thread tap is required to create a threaded hole in a piece of metal such as steel, aluminum, copper, or brass. For a few holes, a standard tap wrench will suffice, but after that, hand fatigue will set in. Socket wrenches with 3/8" male drives and 1/4" hex drill adapters can use these tap holders. However, be cautious because a tap wrench provides a sense of the tap's strength limit, whereas the added weight and leverage of a wrench or a drill removes this sensitivity, making it easy to break a tap. You can thread a lot of holes quickly with these if you use the right tap drill for your thread, oil, and a guide.
This is a fantastic product that works well up to a 1/2" tap with a 3/8" Drive Speedbrace or any other convenient drive. It's small and compact, and it holds the tap securely.

These appear to be well made, but because the maximum size is 1/2", the larger socket's hole is 1/2" (0. 54" to be exact). As a result, the largest tap that will work with this product is one that measures 1/2" *diagonally* across the square end of the tap. This isn't the measurement I was expecting, and these items turned out to be too small for my purposes. br>br>This is the fault of the manufacturer, not the sellers; They were almost certainly repeating what was written on the product's packaging.
With these "sockets," you can use your ratchet to tap a hole or chase a thread. The issue is caused by the socket's design. Basically, when chasing or cutting a thread, it's best to turn forward to make the cut, then backward to clear the chips. The issue arises when you reverse the process; You have to spend more time re-installing the tap because it is no longer held in the socket. It's easier to tighten the socket than it is to cut or clear chips. If you put this thing on an extension and put it in reverse, you're going to have a bad time. It's possible that you won't be able to reclaim your tap!.
You know how tedious a hand tap is if you've ever threaded a needle. Twist, twist, twist, then back off to break the chip, then twist, twist, twist. It's a tedious and time-consuming process. These chucks have a standard 3/8" socket on one end and adjustable square jaws on the other, which can hold smaller or larger taps. I don't use a variable speed drill; instead, I use the chucks that come with my impact driver. I'm worried that the drill's torque will be too high, causing smaller taps to break. If the tap stalls, the impact driver alerts me immediately, and I can quickly back it out and put it back in forward, saving me time. And they're a lot more comfortable on the wrist. br>br>I really like them.
This is a very useful tool that I have wanted for a long time, especially if you have to thread chase a lot of holes with a tap. In addition, compared to a traditional tap wrench, you can get the tap into more places. I only gave it four stars because it's difficult for me to tighten them up really tight to keep the tap from turning off, but if they do, simply retighten. Because I have damaged hands and reduced hand strength, this may not be a problem for you, so give them a shot.
I've always used taps, but these 3/8 square drive ratchet tap holders are new to me. I can't believe I've managed to get by without them for so long. Unfortunately, they're made in China, but they seem to be well-made. It fits perfectly. finish. They will fit a wide variety of tap sizes between the two tools. I've already tried one of these and found it to be excellent. In a cramped space, I needed to tap a hole. It would have been awkward to do that job with a traditional tap holder, but this tool made it super simple to keep the tap aligned without having to fiddle with a sliding T-handle. On a standard tap holder, there is a handle.
For about a month, I've been using these. I'm very pleased with the product's quality. I needed a "floating" tap holder for power tapping on the lathe, but I didn't want to spend a full day in the shop (well, I only get half a day in my shop at a time) making one myself. I was looking on Amazon for a manual tap driver that I could modify (removing the cross bar and milling three flats on the shaft to secure it in a drill chuck) when I came across these and realized they'd be perfect for my needs. In the tailstock, I simply mount a 3/8" square drive impact driver adapter in a keyless drill chuck. It really works. The non- Because of the rigid connection to that adapter, the angle and position can be adjusted slightly, which compensates for the slight sag that occurs when the tailstock is left loose and the tap pulls the tailstock toward the chuck. Tap after the pilot hole has been properly sized. It probably wouldn't work well on very deep tapped holes (a rigid setup for perfect eccentricity would be ideal), but I only tap to a depth of 2x the tap diameter most of the time. I've used this strategy dozens of times and it never fails to impress me. It's something I wish I'd discovered sooner. Added advantage: br>br> As designed, I can use them with a ratchet to do bench work with larger taps. It strikes me as odd that the intended purpose is merely a bonus for me.
To tell you the truth, I was completely unaware of these. I knew I had to have them the moment I saw them (magically suggested by Amazon based on previous purchases). They're absolutely incredible! It's something I'd like to emphasize even more! They are linear from the smallest size up to 1/2" and will hold the bit in place so that it does not move. It's a must-have in my opinion, but I'm only speaking for myself. I returned the Lisle for obvious reasons, despite the fact that it was proudly made in the United States.
This is a fantastic tool for a variety of tapping jobs. This works well with a socket to hex adapter for hand drill tapping, in addition to the original method of using a socket wrench as a tap handle. They can also be used as a starting point for constructing a tapping stand for holes that are straight and aligned. There's also a video on YouTube that shows how to adapt them for use with a lathe tail stock center to tap accurate concentric holes.
