In short, yes. While I have never had to adjust it while marking, it is strong enough to dent the wooden shaft.

The picture of the thumb screw shown when I bought it was a tortoise shell type. When it arrived, however, it had a very cheap Mickey Mouse-looking plastic thumb screw, still sporting all the manufacturing marks. After replacing the crap that came with it with a brass insert and screw, I bought a piece of brass sheet. I like how it looks and it works fine. This worked well with the original plastic screw, but looked like an incredibly cheap piece. I am very pleased with how the rail works with the body, and I am also very pleased with the way that the body and rail fit. I think it's a nice tool in the end.
I hadn't been too concerned about the thumbscrews, having seen older mortising gauges with clear amber thumbscrews. However, it came with a cheap soft plastic screw showing manufacturing seams at the tips. Likewise, the sharp edges of the wood were not rounded off to ease their use, making the wood uncomfortable. Although it does not have the basic qualities of a good tool, it still has many advantages. It's a bit short, but the beam sits tightly against the fence, both perpendicular to each other, and the brass slide holding the second pin is a perfect fit-not too stiff and not too loose-making setting a mortise width a breeze. No charge. With a minimum pin width of 14", it is small enough to deal with the majority of Furthermore, it is made of European Beech, as is indicated on the packaging. As a result, I decided I should play with it. As the original thumbscrew hole was too wide to do anything with, I drilled a new one in the fence on the opposite side to accept a 14"-long screw Brass threaded insert with 20 threads (available for 75 cents at Lowe's). PK 54 with shipping, maximum 140) The hole was covered with a piece of beech, rather than a futile attempt to match the wood Using an ebony disk in contrast to the contrasting 5/8" hole, glue the disk in place. It was sanded and parried to a flush finish, eased at all edges, sanded out the minor machining ridges on the flat surfaces, and sprayed a couple coats of spray paint on it.
A couple of In addition to making it difficult to keep the pin setting for the width of your chisel, loosening the beam to move the fence also causes the tool to be difficult to adjust. Furthermore, it is really difficult to use these pins because they are so long. The shortening of these files is not a problem, as a file will do the job. They are pretty acceptable, especially for the price.
Overall, I'd prefer that they be too long rather than too short.
It is only because I read a few negative reviews and bought it with hesitation that I felt I should comment. There were two concerns I had the screw would not tighten the gauge enough, which would cause it to shift and cause inaccuracies, as well as the low quality of the plastic screw. As far as I know, there have been no issues with the screw. While I do find it to be a little hard to adjust when holding it against a ruler, it might be just my poor techniques. You can mark a scrap piece of wood first, then set the gauge to those markings and it will work perfectly. Though the plastic screw might seem cheaper than a metal screw, this may actually be the most suitable material for the product. Overall, I strongly recommend this product.
I am very impressed with the performance of this device. Don't be concerned about the plastic screw if you are on the fence I am not having any problems with it.
On arrival, I was disappointed to see that the thumb screw is plastic instead of metal, which I had thought was a quality product. Despite the fact that everything else about the product appears to be of good quality, I don't understand why the material wasn't mentioned in the description when the picture appears to portray.
The product is of high quality, and the delivery time is fast. I would recommend this product. It's a quality product and does what it should be doing. I would like it to be larger, but it is smaller than I anticipated. The handle may be a bit awkward for someone with large hands. Because the scribing pins are not made of stainless steel, if they are not maintained and wiped well, rust can form on them.
The plastic screw can be problematic because it is not well finished, but it works perfectly. There is a high degree of accuracy with the gauge, and the wood and finish are superb. If Paul Sellers were alive, he would be delighted.
