Questions & Answers

I have an old PUR hiker that I'd like to sell. Is this filter compatible with my system?

Is this compatible with my old Pur Hiker water pump? It's the one with the gray color scheme.

How many gallons has anyone gotten out of one of these so far?

To be honest, I can't give an exact figure, but I've been on the trail for 20 days and have used my filter on four occasions. I've been replacing it for the past 5 years with 5 man crews. Possibly 200 gallons.

How long will the filter last? 10 years? more?

Hello B- rent: I assume you're talking about the filter that can be replaced. I've been using the same filter since 2007 and have logged about 900 miles with it. Even though the filter is clogged with silt, it continues to function. It's a lot slower in my gravity filter, but it's fine in a pump filter. I'm guessing the 0. If the filter's 2 micron fibers were not used, they would last a very long time. The only thing I'd be concerned about is the o- ring. I'm not sure how long this will last, but if not used, it must be at least 8 years. When it comes to post-hike use, I stick to the manufacturer's recommendations: After flushing with about a liter of bleach and water, allow to dry completely before storing. So, if it's brand new and unopened, I'm guessing it'll last longer than eight years, if not longer. (Especially if kept out of direct sunlight.) Wet filters should never be stored. Furthermore, never let your water filter freeze. The fibers will almost certainly be destroyed or damaged as a result of this. Some fibers (such as the more recent models of the Katadyn filter) are made of glass fibers, which should last indefinitely if left on the shelf. I hope you found this information useful.

Is the base amp 10L 2008 version using the same filter?

My owner's manual is still with me. Yes, it is.

Filters from a bad batch have been replaced
4/5

Edit: The star rating has been updated. Katadyn was quick to respond and is on top of the situation. It appears that there was a manufacturing error, resulting in a small batch of defective filters. A new filter is on its way to me. br>I've been using the Hiker since it was still PUR for decades. I've worked with a variety of cartridges and have a good understanding of how long they last and how good the water is. I replace it every two years or so, and I always use an MSR SiltStopper on the intake to keep it from clogging prematurely. Until recently, on a paddle trip, I had never had a cartridge fail in the field. Even after field cleaning, pumping the filter was nearly impossible. Despite the fact that the silt filter appeared to be clean, I replaced it in the hopes of restoring pump action. This filter cartridge was purchased in October of 2018, was used on two trips, pumped less than 15 liters, and was always used in conjunction with the SiltStopper. Either there was a problem with the batch or the filter medium was changed. I've reached out to Katadyn.

The ideal fit; Installing is a breeze
5/5

Your Filtration System Will Have a New Lease on Life! These filters are an exact match for your Katadyn filter system! I have the Hiker Pro, and these were a perfect fit and function for my system. The filter is OEM, with the proper threading, gaskets, and flow system to give your system a new lease on life. I replaced an old filter and was pleasantly surprised by how quickly and easily this new filter filtered water. It was long past time to replace it! The filter includes a new filter protector as well as flexible netting that must be installed; The process is very simple, and the instructions that come with it will guide you through it. A sponge is also included (for cleaning/wiping the filter protector on a regular basis; You'll be able to remove the filter protector for cleaning after it's been installed. Cleaning the filter protector and protective sleeve, as well as vigorously swishing the filter through clean water, can help extend the life of these filters. The main disadvantage of these filters is their high price, but the Hiker Pro and these replacement filters are well worth the money due to their ease of use and compactness of the system.

It's a bit pricey, but it gets the job done

I have the Katadyn Base Camp Water Filter, which works great. br>br>I have the Katadyn Base Camp Water Filter, which works great. I've used it on several backpacking trips with various groups, and it works much better than the other pump filters I've seen others use. It's something I've done in Colorado and New Mexico. The Katadyn Base Camp Water Filter works on the principle of gravity. Simply fill it with water and hang it from a tree, and it will take care of the rest. The filter only appears to work for a trip or two, which is my only complaint. Granted, the trip to New Mexico lasted a week, and it filtered some questionable water. However, I've had similar success filtering water in Colorado, where it works great for 4-days. After 5 days of filtering what appears to be clear water, it's time to get a new one. Keep in mind that I was filtering water for a group of ten people, so it was put to good use. 3 times a day is a good rule of thumb to follow. Katadyn Base Camp Water Filterbr>It should last a few trips for a small party. br>br>.

I should have read other reviews first

Update: I added two stars for excellent customer service because I contacted Katadyn directly through their website with my complaint, and they promptly sent me a replacement at no cost. Hopefully, it was just a bad batch of cartridges that caused the problem. I'll update again once I've had a chance to test out the new replacement. But I'm still hesitant to put my faith in it. Original review: br>br> The same thing happened to me as it did to others here. After filtering fewer than 20 liters of clear, flowing water, the unit became impossible to pump. The katadyn filter that came with my original unit had worked flawlessly for many years and thousands of liters, but these replacements appear to be garbage. Without the ability to filter, my group and I found ourselves 12 miles into the backcountry. It was not a pleasant experience. I'd strongly advise bringing a backup plan if you're going to take a chance with one of these replacements. It's annoying not to be able to rely on your Katadyn to work when you need it.

If the shoe is appropriate for you

This was purchased to replace a filter in a "Pur Hiker" pump that had become clogged. Although the pump design is identical to that of the Katadyn Hiker, there was some concern about brand name interchangeability. So, if anyone else was wondering if this filter would work in their old Pur brand filter/pump, the answer is yes. it does. In addition, there's a screen that protects the filter element. thing. It appears to be an upgrade over the OG Pur filters, which were already quite good (this system has filtered many, many gallons of various Alaskan water; There are no beaver trots to be found up here, despite the fact that there are plenty of big, gnarly beavers). br>I only gave it four stars because I didn't want to give away the fifth. You know, you've got to keep 'em trying.

PUMPING FOR THREE YEARS I use one of these filters about once a year when kayak camping
5/5

We frequently have to filter lake water, which has a distinct taste, but this charcoal filter effectively eliminates it. One thing to note is that I've seen campers pump water too quickly, and in order for the charcoal to work properly, one must slow down a little to allow the charcoal to absorb the badness from the water.

My Katadyn Hiker Pro has been replaced by this. Take a look at the photo of the old filter that I swapped out for this one. My water is now enjoyable to drink once more.

For a great system, a fantastic filter is required
5/5

The Katadyn system is one of my favorites. Because I can't always get close enough to the water's edge to use some of the other types of filters that don't have a tube to throw into the water, this one is ideal. The Katadyn already has an easy-to-clean screen that goes into the water, but this filter includes an extra pre-filter. a filter element with a screen that wraps around the outside - This is an excellent suggestion.
