How do you compress (travel) a spring? Mine does not appear to have any spring action. ?

It's a strong spring that's difficult to compress by hand; the first time I tried, mine stuck a little.

When you open the gate, how do you keep it from swiveling all the way to the side? Mine swivels all the way to the side, making it impossible for the gate to open. ?

This one is designed to swivel so that it can work on narrow gates. If it's catching, keep pushing until it straightens out. Make sure there's enough space for it to rotate 360 degrees.

Will this work on a vinyl gate that weighs about 20 pounds and is 1" off the deck floor?

Because the wheel requires space/a gap at the bottom to rotate 360 degrees, a 1 inch clearance gate is insufficient. To move the wheel away from the gate, you'd have to mount it to a 2x4 (which I had to do in a similar situation) or something similar thick. Otherwise, the wheel will get stuck rotating.

What is the mounting plate's width?

I THINK IT WAS 3 INCHES WIDE.

It helps to keep the sag in place

Works well for supporting a sagging gate, but the inner spring on the 4 foot wooden gate was too light to act as a shock absorber when working over rough or uneven surfaces. The product appears to be well constructed and should last for many years.
