I installed this item within my garage door opener, tested it twice, and noticed that the gear started fraying after this simple test. Thinking I might have had a problem with my door or with the track, I called an expert to help me diagnose the issue. A service person who claimed to have 32 years of experience fixing all types of garage doors told me that the rollers were in good shape, that the track was in perfect condition, and that the part I ordered was correctly installed. I ordered this part from him and he determined it to be the cause of my problem. His opinion was that the part was refurbished, and so it was not likely it would have been able to handle the stress of opening a residential door, so he replaced my gear and sprocket kit and did not charge me for the part. His service call cost me If you need to replace a residential gear and sprocket, you should not buy this part.
Figure 3 shows the gear in reverse. If the worm gear is reversed, the mechanism will not operate. There are also washers and clips on the motor's drive shaft that are shown wrong. I lost half a day trying to figure it out. I am Joe.
As it turned out, it was just the plastic gear (which in the first place, should have been metal. But I digress a little. I asked my husband to replace the gear on the opener since shavings poured out when he opened the door. The 25+ year-old unit was full of shavings, so we considered changing the gear before replacing the unit! I fixed it, lo and behold! According to our research, it has the same durability as the original gear so we expect that it will last for another 20 The savings of over $100 are worth the effort!.
The gear for the opener had to be replaced once the opener was apart. It took about 10 minutes to replace the gear. Even though I did not bother with most of the extra parts, it is nice that these parts are all included. The gear worked flawlessly after I had my opener reinstalled. I was able to use my 20+ year old opener once again. I saved a few coins by doing that.
In the meantime, I'm using this to provide an interim fix until my arm heals and I'm able to replace the whole opener. There is some reason why the sprocket on the output shaft is welded to the shaft after being ground down. Until now it has been OK, but I am concerned about something that happened previously.
As for the product itself, it works fine, but it is a bit slow and tedious to remove the garage opener in order to service it. It is best to start at the front of the machine by removing the chain and the cables and then the screws that hold the machine in place. The rest is a piece of cake.
In the middle of the winter, I was really bummed when I broke off the drive sprocket from my garage opener. In fact, it took me just an hour to repair the device with this cheap replacement kit that arrived in two days. Added some tension to my garage door springs, which were a bit loose (maybe the cause of the opener failure). Great kit that I highly recommend. (original worm gear was left, only the main shaft and gears were fixed).
The only suggestion I would make is to take a photo of the original gears and washers as you disassemble, otherwise the guide can get pretty confusing. Otherwise, a very good kit, eventually I saved $160 when compared to buying a new one.
