My garage door opener broke and I was not looking forward to spending $200 on a new one. Taking my old opener apart sounded like it was making noises and the motor seemed to be running strong, so I decided to take a closer look at it and see what was wrong. There was no doubt that the dive gear had been stripped away. Since the worm gear was fine, I bought this product even though I am not a very "mechanical" person. However, I can easily adjust to and figure things out with the product. In about an hour and a half, I was able to fix the problem (frequent views from the YouTube video). Due to the fact that I didn't have 5/32 punch, I spent a half hour trying to remove the old drive gear. While I succeeded in making this, if I ever have to do it again, I will buy a punch to make it more efficient. Despite the fact that the drive gear is stripped, I would recommend attempting to fix it yourself if money is tight. You can use the grease they give you just as long as you use it. After you have put the new gear back into the opener assembly, you should apply it to the new drive gear. The last time I tightened the screws, I got grease all over me from trying to tighten them. It would be a good idea to find an instructional video for your model and watch it several times first. I did not remove the motor from the assembly as in my video. Although it took a bit of finagling, I was able to remove the drive gear sprocket without having to take the motor out.
If the motor runs and the door isn't moving, there is a lot of information on Amazon and the internet in general that says the plastic gear has stripped out. The door opener we use dates back more than 18 years. It is apparent from a quick inspection that the gear is stripped, but the motor, worm gear, and the other bits are all intact. As a result, I purchased the gear, the low temp grease, and followed the instructions I found online. My switch was simple to change, as I only had to remove the mechanism with the gear out of the top of the unit. You don't need to replace everything else if the gear is the only problem. However, you will need to do more work to replace everything else if the gear is the only problem. You can find more information about "How To" by clicking on the following link though it will probably be edited out so that this will be enough to work out download. I was able to replace this very easily. First make sure you clean up any debris that may fall from your work area, since this is only You will not find any roll pins or retainer clips with the product. In addition, it is not packaged with assembly instructions, but with a simple search on Google, I was able to find them. Despite the fact that prime shipping was available for this particular item, I ordered it. If you have one, you might want to rip it apart before ordering so that you know you won't need other spare parts available with some other brands. The gears in this box are driven by worm gears.
My happy surprise was finding a package deal in which you can buy the gear and grease together. After about an hour of work, the part swap was complete, and my opener now works like new. is not a repair for the faint of heart since it takes a bit of work to remove the old gear from the shaft, but, if you are mechanically inclined, it is not a major task. You may want to be careful with the worn old gear as it can be quite sharp.
The drive gear for garage door openers can be easily replaced. A new gear and grease may need to be replaced about an hour after the old gear is removed. It can be done with very few tools and very little 150 dollars were saved by me. I had to replace myself with $1000.
Instead of purchasing a new garage door opener, I made an effort to repair my old one when I found a pile of plastic shreds under the It was a great purchase and I am glad I made it I am thrilled with the improved performance of my garage door opener (finally)!.
