There is a gear system at the side of the cycle selection that is made of plastic with dual wear. However, the inner gear is difficult to access by the user, though the knob can be easily installed and replaced. You need to apply a great deal of pressure to the knob in order to select the cycles, without also changing the inside gear.
It turned out that the knob was not what it was supposed to be. I have attached a photo of my original knob next to one of a genuine GE knob bearing the same serial number. Due to the lack of a serial number, the one I received appears to be a knockoff. on this replacement are noticeably thinner than those on the original, and to make matters worse, the spindle has been slightly extended. Due to the slight variations between the two, the knob is unable to engage the timer plate and makes a loose fit. There's nothing wrong with it. However, I did not feel.
It is a poor design, but it is fine to replace it. I recommend you keep an extra one on hand. I am writing my third in a row. We are careful about it at all times.

This is great! After watching some YouTube videos with old jovial guys showing you exactly how to do it, replacing this knob was a breeze. My needles were broken, so I needed a pair I had to use needle-nose pliers to complete the task, but it only took 5 minutes to fix, and now my washer works superbly. It is pretty weird to see how much the old dial's teeth have worn away.
