Once a month, I clean mine in my sink with a mixture of vinegar and water. 75% vinegar plus 25% water ) I also have two cats and one dog, so you won't have to clean it as frequently if you don't have any pets.

The inside of the filter used to be wired so that it could stand straight and wick properly. Recent events have aggravated the situation. I'm currently sewing the top of the filter together, and 3- 1/2 inch from the bottom to give it a little more life. Is there any other option for solving this problem besides purchasing a humidifier with a different type of filter? I'm fed up with Aircare and dissatisfied with their service. Essex used to produce a high-quality product, but not any longer.
This was purchased to go with my AirCare Model MA0800 humidifier. Before this one, I tried a few others, and they all had the same bad design. This one is my favorite because the filter fits the unit without needing to be trimmed down, whereas the others did not, and it appears to be made of a stiffer material than the others I've tried. So, if you're looking for a MAF2 filter, this could be the best option. br>br>However, the overall design is terrible. Maybe it's because there are so many different model units to fit, but I don't see why the filter doesn't have some sort of frame around it to prevent sagging. This WILL happen at some point, severely limiting the unit's ability to provide humidity. So, if your unit is constantly running like mine, expect to replace the filter every four months or so. 6 weeks. If it had a frame, you could flip it and get a little more use out of it because the top half stays relatively clean while the bottom is submerged in water. br>br>However, I tried two others from different manufacturers and found this one to be the best. So I'm only giving it four stars because, in my opinion, it's the best MAF2 replacement available, not because it's a great filter. br>br>I've decided to replace my furnace humidifier with a larger unit in the hopes of getting rid of the portable entirely.
I also noticed that it was starting to fall apart, with small pieces falling to the humidifier's bottom. Fortunately, I had saved the previous year's filter, which, despite part of it becoming hardened with lime, performed far better than my current one. I'm not sure if I just got a bad filter or if they're not being made as well as they should be. Very let down.
I've been using this generic replacement for a few weeks now, and I can already tell that it won't last much longer. Because the filter has started to harden near the top, the humidity output has been stifled. I use the recommended bacterialstat solution, but the filter itself is of poor quality.
To avoid the top of your filter drying out and becoming crusty, I recommend flipping it after each fill up. Second, because the filter is made of paper, it is delicate and should be handled with care when flipping or cleaning it. The third option is to use the Essick Air 1970 Humidifier Bacteriostatic Treatment, which can be purchased on Amazon. To keep the filter clean, I've tried vinegar and/or distilled water, but neither worked and actually caused mildew to grow. Essick Air 1970 Humidifier Bacteriostatic Treatment has kept the filter clean and has reduced the frequency with which the filter must be replaced.
I like the humidifier, but this year's wicks aren't holding up very well. This year, the wicks only seem to last about 3 weeks before I notice the humidity level in the air dropping, and the water level drops very slowly, whereas last winter (from late November to March), one filter lasted the entire season and the humidifier ran properly the entire time; this year, the wicks only seem to last about 3 weeks before I notice the humidity level in the air dropping, and the humidifier ran properly the entire time. When I look at the filter, it's not as filthy as it was last winter, but it's wet, bent over, and there are small pieces of it floating around in the water. This was not the case the previous year. My water seemed to have changed completely at first (we have our own well), but I haven't noticed anything different anywhere else in the house where water stays (like the toilet). However, based on other reviews on this site, it appears that I'm not the only one who notices a significant difference between the current wick we receive when ordering this part and previous wicks; it's a significant drop in quality and costs significantly more than it should.
