Questions & Answers

Does anyone have any comparisons (by actual experience with both) of this saw and the Sven There's only a $3 difference between this and the old one. ?

Both have been good to me, and I have used I like both of them. They work well and both can cut just fine. Their handles are the same on both. It is for this reason that I bought it instead of. I also have a buddy (who backpacks with me who carries a Sven blade) who told me it can take almost

Did you also use the Sven before? How did the blade of this one compare to the Sven? I am trying to decide which to choose. ?

It has never been my experience to make use of I have tried cutting wood with other tools, but can't compete with the blade on this saw.

Real weight how do you define it? There is no way that 6 ounces can be true. Are rivets made of aluminum as well? I would appreciate if you stopped responding with "I don't know.". ?

I received one of these as a gift at least 20 years ago from my son, and I still have it today. Rather than a pound and a half, it weighs 1 pound, These aluminum rivits are holding up well after being used for a long time at a camp. This is a great site.

Bushcraft/camp saw that you can pack in your backpack I am superior to Sven, Laplander, and others! I found the Coghlans Folding Saw, 21" to be one of my best values in camping/bushcraft gear so far
5/5

I was relatively young when I worked for a huge outdoor sports retailer, where I came to know Coghlans for its low price points and inexpensive products A two-word sentence or two-word phrase A very small budget can enable a family to enjoy camping on a very limited As a result, I was surprised when I started using this saw and found it to be better designed and just as well built as some of the best portable saws on the market from better known SMARTLY UPDATED FOLDING - Updated styles and formats A triangular design makes a good start. It's faster to deploy, with no pieces to lose.

If you've ever seen or used the Sven folding saw, then the 21" Coghlans folding saw will look very familiar to you. Similar to the Sven in size, it is virtually identical in shape. It is 21" long and 2" wide when folded Five and eighteenths of an inch wide (at the outer end of the fold) and five and a half inches The weight of the device is 16 ounces. Sven combines the triangular geometry of the blade with the triangular geometry of the saw when deployed. However, there is no similarity between them. As a result, Coghlans' folding triangle design has been substantially improved. A couple reasons to choose the Sven First, it has no loose parts like the Sven's Attaching and tensioning the blade is not done correctly due to a missing wingnut. A Coghlans saw does not have discrete pieces instead, all of its pieces are integrally connected. There is virtually no chance for a piece to be damaged during the move. As the saw can be deployed much faster than the Sven, it can also be deployed much faster since everything is connected. need to do is (1) lower the tensioning handle, (2) loosen the saw blade retention screw, (3) unfold the blade, (4) insert the hole in the free end of the blade into the peg of the tensioning handle, and (5) fold the stressing handle up. As soon as the blade is perfectly positioned with optimum tension, it locks into place. Congratulations! You have completed your task! It does not take more than 20 seconds to install the saw after you have tried it two or three times. A little bit at a time- To ensure the saw does not shut down during assembly, ensure you don't lose a critical component). The Coghlans design also has a neater, less prominent handle than the Sven because there is no extra length protruding below the cutting teeth (which I always found strange on the Sven since it would bump against my thigh when cutting). As a result, the Coghlans saw offers a slightly smaller, slightly lighter, noticeably faster-running version of the standard saw A deployment that ended in loss, but mercifully The proof is in the In addition, the Coghlans can also work with any 21" saw blade, unlike the Sven, which requires a proprietary blade. On the Coghlans, any 21" buck saw blade with a hole at either end should do the trick. It only takes a few seconds to change the blade, just remove the keyring securing the pivot pin, remove the pin, insert a new blade, and attach the keyring again to secure the pivot pin. This saw has a number of simple but very substantial refinements that make it a truly The construction quality of the building is excellent, notably the superb efficiency with which the cutting is done. There are two oval-shaped frames on either side of the space A channel of aluminum is used for the tensioning handle and folding joint, while heavy-duty (1/8" thick) black polymer is used for the tensioning handle and folding joint. As soon as it is deployed, it becomes a very sturdy saw that is really easy to handle The blade is tensioned so that it cuts easily both when pushing and pulling. Those who associate plastic with junk may complain about the polymer parts, but they appear to be durable enough for this purpose and shouldn't break if you use a buck saw properly (i. e. It's best to let your teeth and long, efficient strokes do the work rather than forcing your body downward). This is an impressive blade. It is a 21" Bahco woodcut blade of decent quality, which also eases cutting wood It has earned the trust and esteem of many outdoor enthusiasts. In combination with good cutting teeth, the 21" blade's length makes it significantly more efficient at cutting wood than the commonly used 8" to 10" pull-type saws. Folding saws of this type are ubiquitous, such as the Bahco Laplander or Silky Globeboy. This may not seem so important, but if you're making more than a few cuts, it is very easy to lag behind. You only need to ask someone whose pull saw is kinked how it got so bent. When compared to those other folding pull-type saws, you'll get at least twice as many cuts for the same amount of effort with the Coghlans. Cutting a large pile of wood for a campfire through a long cold night, for example, adds up to a considerable difference in efficiency between saws. As a test cut, I cut a 2" diameter branch of southern yellow pine five times in a row with virtually no effort (i. e. My arm did not feel fatigued at all, there was no noticeable rise in my breathing or heart rate). A single pass through the diameter of 2" took an average of ten strokes per pass. If we compare a folding pull-up to a smaller one If you use a saw like the Laplander or Gomboy 240, you can save a lot of energy. Later, I cleared some 3-inch thick wood with the Gomboy 240. A path in the woods behind our house came to an abrupt end due to fallen 2 1/2" pines. Despite not counting the strokes or counting the seconds, I was zipping through each tree so quickly that it could not have taken more than 20 or 30 seconds for a cut. It is almost impossible to feel fatigued. It is truly a pleasure to cut with this blade because it is rigid and the frame is so rigid. Cutting capacity of this saw is up to 3 inches, and it will saw through wood with almost no effort, quickly and almost effortlessly The diameter of the half-inch is 1/2". As such, it is adequate for most bushcraft and camping activities. In technical terms, it could also handle much larger cutting tasks for wood up to 8" If you cut more than three inches, you will risk damage to your premises A cut all the way through from a fixed angle will significantly limit the length of stroke your machine can take (before hitting the triangle frame). The fact that this is not a problem or shortcoming is not a problem for me. There is a restriction to the straightness of the frame due to the triangular geometry The depth of cutting is a little more than a conventional one A buck saw in the shape of a star. a depth of cut of 3", 3/4 of a full stroke is possible If the material hits the frame), it will be soaked in. By the time you reach 5" depth, you will only be able to make half a stroke, and the long blade will lose its efficiency benefit. It is not shortcoming or troublesome in any way. I have not found anything to complain about with this saw so far. I was astonished by how excellent it works and how ruggedly it is built, with perfect blade tension and tight, smooth joints. In my opinion, however, there are a few things that could be improved. (2) The split ring (keyring) that retains the blade pivot pin will bang loudly against the aluminum frame while hiking unless you silence it by placing a thick rubber washer underneath it, or wrapping a rubber band around it, or using electrician's tape. It was enough for me to quiet it down if I switched it for a smaller (1/2" diameter) keyring. No stuff sack. (2) No stuff bag. I think Coghlans would make a great deal by including a small nylon pouch for the saw, preferably with a few loops, webbing straps, or velcro tabs to make attachment to a pack easier. Even so, I think that would increase the price point, and I'm sure many people already have a place to stow this in their existing packs- You can do this by tucking the padded area under one of the compression straps and supporting it with a pocket underneath. Three (3) The finish details need to be smoothed. While the product is very well built, Coghlans leaves the edges and slits of the cut aluminum to be rough. It is nothing more than a few slight licks with a fine file or a few 400-grit discs It is impossible to fix with grit sandpaper. Be sure to smooth out the corners before bringing this saw into the wilderness, or it may wear or tear your pack (or scratch the flesh of someone who comes into contact with it unprepared). There was a time when choosing between the ultra-expensive and the ultra-reliable was difficult unfortunately, that has changed. It was much more efficient to cut with the Sven saw (with its slower setup and more awkward setup) than with the ultra-fast laser Using a pulley system is convenient In contrast to Laplanders (which deploy instantly but require a lot more effort to use), the folding saws like the Laplander actually require more weight and torque to operate. Luckily, the Coghlans strike a perfect balance between the two of them. I'm fine with my weight as long as I don't obsess over counting every gram. As a result, it weighs nearly twice as much as some of the lightest pull-baffles on the market Unlike other saws of this type, it folds out and can be used in an exponentially more efficient and useful manner. I am only going out for a day or two, I will likely go with the lighter weight of the Bahco Laplander (or Silky Gomboy 240), but for anything longer than 2 days, it will be the 21" Coghlan's folding saw! This saw is absolutely remarkable and I am totally surprised that more people do not use and recommend it. It is possible that it has been overlooked because Coghlans is almost synonymous with low-quality Often overlooked when discussing lightweight performance gear, this equipment is often at the low end of the price range. However it should be used, I highly recommend it for camping and bushcraft, especially if you will be out for a few days or more. There was an unexpected ice storm in Georgia that caused 350,000 homes to lose power almost three days ago, so I was not expecting an update so soon. Several trees fell on my neighborhood so all my neighbors asked me if they could borrow a chainsaw from me. told them I didn't have a chainsaw but I had a hand saw, they sighed in disappointment and said they would have to make do with what I had. I soon noticed that their eyes grew wide as I zipped through trees with 2-7" diameters. All the while, I heard comments like, "That thing is as fast as a chainsaw!". That hand saw could cut so well!" and "I never knew hand saws could cut so well!" The comment that I thought was the most poignant As soon as you said you had a 'hand saw,' I thought this was going to be a long process. What is that? Where did you get it? This is what I want! The short story is this, there were so many trees down that I went ahead and built my daughters a teepee instead of the tree house they had been planning. It was able to slice and de-vein the roof in a few hours 12 limbed 15' pine supports of 4" to 5" diameter which were limbed in about two hours. The blade is still razor sharp after all that, and it's ready for further use! In sum, while I do not normally use a saw this intensively unless I'm working on some bushcraft, I can now attest that this little saw is not only capable but also very efficient in the course of constructing a basic house Shelter for the wilderness on a permanent basis. Cuts through larger logs than 4 inches are surprisingly manageable as long as you are in a position to rotate the log or move under it to cut from multiple angles (such as when a heavy log is laid flat against the ground and cannot When dealing with anything that requires a cut that takes more than 5" or 4", you need to be able to deal with it from several angles. In conclusion, let me say this Would you like to work for a super-efficient company Can wilderness saws be used in heavy-duty cutting operations? There's no denying that this baby is a real beauty!.

This saw is dangerous! Stay away from it! Traveling by backpack is something I would like to do with this
3/5

was able to unpack the first one I received and fix the blade without any difficulty. Trying to take apart the blade, the plastic handle snapped off as I released the pressure from the blade. So, I asked for a replacement after I realized that the saw was defective. It took me only a few days to receive the new saw. There were no problems to be found. I tried it out a few months later, but didn't get to use it. Having to saw a branch in my yard, I got this saw out of my toolbox. Upon loosening the tension to remove the branch, the handle of the saw broke right at the same spot as it cut the branch! This is an image of the broken piece that I uploaded. I am unable to return it since the warranty period with Amazon has expired. Now I've run out of money and of a saw. My experience with it has been 0 for 2 so I am sure to stay away from.

The design is great, but the construction is weak
3/5

As well as others, I had the same problem During the pivot forming process, a plastic piece After experimenting with other materials, I ended up making a piece of this structure is quite good in terms of how it folds and sets up, but the construction needs to be revised and made out of aluminum as well. Saws like this one cut very well, and their blades are of a common size, so they can be readily replaced when they wear out.

There are rarely any reviews I write about products on Amazon
5/5

I prefer to write about products I have used in the past. I am taking my time to write this review since I am so surprised by the quality of this saw. Sven saws have been the object of my use for 11 years, originally as a camper and then later as a guide in a tripping camp in the north east of the U. S. I took the risk of buying this Saw because it has positive reviews and a smarter design that I thought would make it an excellent investment for my home. It is very common for Sven saws (which are excellent products) to lose the screw that tightens the blade, which renders the machine useless. The Nimar saw is as good as the Sven saw in terms of cutting wood, but it is made of only one piece, which makes it foolproof. When you boil your food with a saw, that's an especially important consideration. As well as this, the handle is much more comfortable due to the strong plastic cover on the side, which works well for your hands after a few minutes of sawing. Well done Coghlan for creating a top quality product for an affordable.

Please do not cut the rope
3/5

The only thing that prevented me from giving it a 5 is the fact that it broke before I could Is there a reason not to give it I did this repair myself because it was fairly simple. An adhesive rivet that holds the handle to the main arm broke off and caused the hinge to break. I sawed my first piece of wood before doing this. The piece of sheet metal and new rivets that I bought were used to replace the broken one. After using the saw for a while, it is far better than before. However, I must stress! In view of this, would I trust the saw on a wilderness hike, since it comes directly from its manufacturer? In other words, no way! You need to be prepared to modify this saw as soon as you get it, if you intend to depend on it. It is a good, light saw that will get the job done. I contacted Coghlans and reported the problem, but they did not respond, so you may be looking at a useless tool just when you need it most. I should also mention that I had contacted Coghlans and reported the problem and they did not respond. Last but not least, here's what I want you to know I am grateful to Amazon for their quick resolution of this problem. The best customer service can never be beaten by them.

I highly recommend this book
5/5

The strongest and most durable product on the market! Perfect! I've been looking for something just like this. Ideal for bug out bags that require compactness and light weight. The bag has a tad more height than the purse. However, it can be secured on the side if you want to find the perfect saw that takes up less space. This was what you were looking for. This is a good deal! It is very easy to assemble, with a very sharp blade that tucks into itself. This tool is the best choice for camping and the outdoors when you need to cut trees or logs quickly.

A compact saw that does the job perfectly
5/5

My son broke this saw a couple of years ago, after I had gotten it maybe 20 years earlier. I don't know how he can break anything, but he can. I bought a second one last year for myself, and then acquired a third one for my daughter for Christmas tree cutting this year. A very good folding saw which is light weight and I like how easy it is to use and carry and how well it cuts!.
