This vise has extras and is of good quality
5/5

My choice was between this vise and a Peak rotary vise, but I chose the Griffin one as it was easier to use and at a lower price point. I really wanted the Peak, but if you add just their clamp, you already end up
I have realized after using this vise for a few weeks that this tool is probably worth the price just by itself. It is impressive how smooth the operation is and how well the quality is. Even when I tie deer hair flies, I have not experienced any problems with the base, despite some complaints about it being too light. You cannot find a vise with this level of quality at this price, including the extras that are included. Even if this is your first vise, I would strongly recommend it. If you would like to thank me later, please do.

There is only one complaint
5/5

Except for the weight and size of the pedestal base, I like everything about this vise. The size is too small and the weight is too I'd recommend a 5"x at least 8" with a weight of 4 #s . . . . everything else is fine. It's not too late, Griffin. You can make an excellent effort. The following modifications have been made. I know that this might be overkill. . . A 7" X 6" X 3/4" piece of art. It was made from scrap steel that a friend had, and he welded down the post so that I could attach the vise to it. The weight of the painted piece was four pounds after I cleaned and painted it. *nowhere is going to be safe from this bad boy

Had a small problem with the jaws
In my first contact with Griffin, Holly took over in a big way. She listened to my concerns and offered a solution straightaway. The Griffin team will assist you with any problem you may have. There is no way to put it into words how awful it is. She will solve any problems you may run into with the vise if you ask for her. I am highly satisfied with the company.

I just received my vise today and have been trying to assemble it
4/5

My vise's head won't lock to the vertical post that secures the post to the wall. A set screw in the allen head of the vise head secures it into the vertical post at the top. The vise head once again spins, and I can't get it to stay horizontal as it appears to be in the pictures, even when I cranked down the allen head screw tight as I could. However tight I tighten the set screw down, no matter how hard I press down on the vise head, it can easily be removed from the vertical post. A vise that cannot be used is therefore I am updating Customer service helped me resolve my issue within minutes of my emailing them about it. I was instructed to install the screw on the other side of the horizontal bar and it would work, and indeed it did, and thus the issue was resolved. In case anyone else runs into the same issue, I left my original issue in the review. The service and support are great!.

Lefties should be aware of this product
4/5

There are no problems with the cam lever it is a good rotary vice. You do need to reset the jaw setting when you modify hook types (e. g. Saltwater versus freshwater trout hooks), this is fairly easy to do, and I find that the setting doesn't really need frequent adjustment during a session (at least the way I tie them). When I spin deer hair I use the vise base to keep the jaws stable even when the jaws are moving. However, the only issue I have with its use is that it is clearly a right hand tier's vise, as I am left-handed. The delivery was not flawless at times, and I'm not quite certain of who's fault it was, but at the end of the day it all worked out. When there is a delay, I would prefer both vendors to let me know how to reach them. It's also good to make sure that a customer knows what is happening when he or she needs it.

This hook has a great holding power, but a somewhat awkward design
4/5

* These are some of the pros of this vise With this unit, you'll get a pedestal base, a c-clamp, a bobbin, a bobbin threader, a bobbin cradle and a nice plastic carrying case that's padded on the interior. Take it with you when you go on vacation or to a fly tying class if needed. Among the other standouts are

- Jaws on this tool are top-notch, and they hold a variety of hook sizes. The Odyssey Spider, by comparison, does not have the Mongoose cam lever, which makes them easier to set. I have attached a photo of the thicker jaws, yet they still taper to a point (see below). The easiest jaws I've ever used are these they hold hooks very well and are extremely easy to use. Please note
It is possible to pivot the head upward or downward, but I don't think I would personally use that feature. The Allen screw is needed as well to tighten and loosen the nut. Please note
As soon as the inline rotation is set up, it is Please note
As a means of moving hook shafts of varying sizes into the vise's axis of rotation, the jaws themselves are able to slide up and down. A video is included so you can see how to adjust it. Please note
Even though it is a little weird, I truly like the way the little D handle makes the rotating action seem like a There is no discomfort in this chair. Please note
My favorite feature is the materials clip, but I'm not a fan of It's difficult for me to set up the rotary drag the way I want. In my experience, it is difficult to 'tune' this part because the main rotary shaft wobbles around in a lot of positions inside the stem/vertical post. Securing everything is more difficult because the drag friction is greater. It would be helpful to provide more detail in the instructions. Please note
We can't use the pedestal because it's too small and light. Although the Mongoose not only has its jaws almost reaching the very edge of the vise, the head is also offset from the main vertical post thus, it is sometimes difficult to wrap on estaz or chenille without it tipping backwards. While not much, and I don't consider myself aggressive, but enough to be a bit of a nuisance. My vise seems to be top heavy as a result. The c-command will be available if you use it The vast majority of information in this section could not be of any use Please note
As if Frankenstein's monster was thrown together from different parts and materials, the overall build quality seems a bit patched together. Its heavy duty feel does not feel as heavy as other vises I have used. I am sure it was to reduce cost, but it doesn't FEEL as heavy duty. Please note
Oil needs to be placed around the rotating shaft in order for things to run smoothly. Oil for sewing machines, 3 oz. 1 or something like that. In general, the vise is well regarded at this price point and is a very popular item. I like the Mongoose because it has many great features. I also like the lifetime warranty that it offers. The second thing is that a fly tying vise is extremely personal, so I don't think this one is right You should try this vice in person if you can. The process will save you a lot of trouble.

The vise is very good at a great price
5/5

Montana Mongoose has been a great purchase for me. Fly tying vise is something more than just a tying device, it is a high-quality work of industrial art. CNC machining in the USA at a reasonable price, don't stop looking at it/playing took me about an hour and a half to set it up the way I wanted it. A little more detail could have been added to the instructions. Allen head set screw inside the rotation handle and the knurled nut inside the handle you've dialed it in where you want, it takes no time at all to work on your fly. You can stop the rotation at any point to work on it. There's no doubt about it.

Small flies are no match for this vise
4/5

It's a great dog, I have a Mongoose and I Small hooks, from 16 inches to 24 inches, work great with this technique I usually tie number 22, which is what I do most of the time. The clamp does an excellent job and I can weed out bad hooks as the more inexpensive ones break off easily. The quality is good, but the metal base pad started wearing off after one week. I would give it 5 stars otherwise. Does anyone else have this experience? The attached photos illustrate what I am saying.
