Across the bottom of the lower bar are 40" of space. 39" is the height of the upper bar. The lower bar of my custom frame overlaps the trim by 2" on each side when it is mounted on a 36" opening.

Immediately, I must admit that the design of this pull up bar and the way it is installed makes it a very well designed fitness equipment piece. Solid materials have been used in its construction. this product is that with all the innovative and thoughtful efforts put into developing it that you would think the company would also spend the same amount of time on quality control I will now mention a few issues that did not impact the performance of the product. It would be great if the manufacturers went the extra mile to ensure that their products are top-notch. A couple of the screws on the pull up bar were loose, and there were plastic shards protruding from the plastic end pieces. These had to be cut away. If you use this product, you may have a bit of a mark on your door front, but nothing too My product was slightly marked up.
