For the foam blocks, I actually purchased this "kit," if that's what you want to call it. I examined the straps as soon as it arrived and found them to be exactly what I expected: trash. I've seen better straps for less money at the dollar store. The straps are of poor quality, with a break strength of around 50 pounds. Were they ratchet straps at all? NOPE. They were yanking on buckles that were too tight. I would have lost the canoe on the first on ramp if I had used these! I immediately threw them away and replaced them with my 2" 1000lb ratchet straps! Even at 75 mph with a 30 mph crosswind, the foam blocks did their job, and once properly secured, the canoe didn't move a centimeter. We paddled 100 miles only to discover that the lake we planned to visit was inaccessible. We drove another 100 miles back to our house. After removing the canoe from the roof, the paint was perfect, the canoe (17 foot Aluminum canoe) was undamaged, and the blocks returned to their original shape after a few minutes in the sun. My PERSONAL straps, as well as the blocks, did their job. The original straps from this kit are still in use and are buried in a landfill. br>br>In conclusion, purchase this kit solely for the blocks. As soon as possible, toss out the cheap, flimsy straps that came with it.
It's difficult to tighten the cam strap that runs through the car's interior. The rest of the system worked better after I made adjustments after a canoe slid off the roof at 60 miles per hour. I misplaced one of the cushions, but the rest of the journeys went smoothly.
I originally purchased them for my old coleman scanner, but I sold it before I could put them to use. I've never used them because they don't fit the gunwales on my Lifetime Wastach 130. I'm going to put the foam blocks on a pair of saw horses to hold my canoe, and I think they'll be perfect. 4 stars because the straps appear to be of low quality, but otherwise this is a good product.
I worked on one transport, but the tie downs would not stay in place. Everything became jumbled, and I misplaced the blocks and was on the verge of losing the canoe.
The foam blocks were effective, but I didn't bother with the straps because other reviews indicated that they were ineffective. Instead of including junk straps, I wish they would sell just the foam blocks for a lower price.
On our VW Passat, we were hauling an Old Town canoe on the roof.
These were used to mount a 16-foot canoe on a Ford F150 quad cab with a full moon roof glass. br>With the back of the canoe secured by a hitch bar, it sat comfortably on the roof, with the foam only touching the roof. Even though I made a few of my own, the straps worked well.
For the blocks, I bought it. The straps are a complete waste of money. Go to a local hardware store and get some good ones.
