because there is a reason It's a good salt mix! The industry standard is Instant Ocean Reef Crystals Salt, and it's for a reason: it's GOOD SALT! I don't see how you can go wrong with Reef Crystals for the price and after doing all of my research. Has all of the nutrients and the proper chemical balance of more expensive salts. Is this better than the Red Sea, in my opinion? They are very close to being the same, based on my research and test results. You should not need to dose if you use this salt and change your water regularly. That isn't 100% true in all cases (for example Acropora use abundance of Calcium). If you're buying this product in this size, you're either a casual gamer or a bulk buyer. This salt is ideal for the home gamer in your 10-inch gaming console. Tank capacity: 1,000 gallons If you fall into the latter category, this salt will be of great assistance to you. Having said that, I've been keeping freshwater and saltwater fish tanks for over 20 years. I've learned a few things that I'd like to share with others in the hopes of assisting them.
A photo of my tank was included. I've been using reef crystals in my tank for the past 6 years. I began with small frags that required a lot of searching. Any exposed rock is now difficult to find. ) This mix has never given me any problems.
I've been keeping Reef Aquariums for over 30 years, dating back to the days when reefers were salivating over Julian Sprung's next magazine article. br>br>Instant Ocean is not, in my opinion, the industry standard; there are certainly better salt mixtures available, but at the end of the day, it won't make much of a difference because any coral I've encountered thrives on Instant Ocean. I'm not sure why one guy says go to BRS for the salt when BRS is selling it for $63 and Amazon is selling it for $44 with free shipping if you have Prime. The reason this salt is the most popular is because it gives the most bang for the buck and while it is one of the cheapest salts it is still a very good salt. br>br>I'm not a fan of some of the new pharmaceutical grade multi mixture salts that require like five different things to I like Red Sea Salt, but with the price per gallon of water nearly doubled and no discernible difference in coral growth, I gradually returned to instant Ocean. br>br>My advice to you is to let a mix of, say, 50 gallons of water mix for at least 24 hours and aerate it properly using the pumps. Don't go all the way to 1 teaspoon of salt. As the mix progresses through the 24-hour cycle, the salinity will rise to 026ppm. I usually end at number one. 020ppm, then recheck after 12 hours and add more salt if necessary. After that, check for ALK, Calk, and, of course, temperature in the water. Heat or cool the batch to your tank's temperature before testing the Alk, Calk, and Mg levels. If any of them are out of range for your aquarium's parameters, gradually add the required components in small increments until the water is as close to that of your tank as possible. I rarely have to add anything to Instant Ocean, but every now and then it will be a little low on calcium, not to the point of being dangerous, but just enough to make me feel better.
I contacted Instant Ocean for the first time to deal with a situation that appeared to be killing my fish and corals after over 30 years of keeping marine and reef aquariums. The entire tank freaked out after I did a water change. Corals shrank, and fish began to run around the tank, scratching and running to the surface, as if they were having spasms. I've had this tank for almost five years, and six of the fish in it have been there from the beginning. I initially mistook this for an anomaly, but the next water change confirmed my suspicions. I was terrified because the fish was extremely stressed by this behavior, which lasted for hours. I tested my RO water and found that it contained no chlorine and had a dissolved solids level of zero (0 PPM). PH was 8. 2 and everything appeared to be in order; the only difference was the salt, which had been purchased from Amazon in a new batch. I went to the store and bought regular Instant Ocean, changed the water, and the fish behaved normally, as one would expect after 30 years in the hobby. When I contacted Instant Ocean support, they requested water parameters, which I provided. They then informed me that it was a fish disease and that I should look up the symptoms on the internet. Wow. Just wow. Nothing happened when I asked for a replacement or a credit. So, despite thousands of dollars in sales over the years that I've used them, you're basically on your own with this product; there's no kind of support, and they won't help you.
I have never encountered any problems. I have seen a consistent quality of water ever since. My water has always looked clean and clear, it is very easy to mix. I purchased the coral from the company.
I thought I'd save some money by purchasing this on Amazon, but that was a huge mistake. The first packet worked fine; I opened the second packet, did a 15 gallon water change, and went about my business as usual; however, I lost about a quarter of my livestock. 2 weeks later, I did another water change and lost another quarter of my livestock. All of the water parameters were found to be in good working order. br>I purchased another brand of salt from BRS and had no problems; I saved a few dollars on this order, but it cost me a few hundred dollars in livestock. br>br>I will never buy salt from anyone other than a reputable company again.
