Many people make their own, and that is fine, but these are an excellent option for those who are seeking to simplify things.
Make sure the pads are changed regularly to prevent excessive accumulation of nutrients. In the United States, they are known as polishing pads because they catch the fine particles that cause clouds of water to form. There are still some of my older power filters that I use for mechanical micron filters, and I use these pads in them.
