Having never used it with the retractable, I have no experience with it. I think it is easier to keep control of two dogs at the same time if they are close together.
The split attachment is all.
Two hooks are necessary. One is for your dog's collar and one is the leash hook. I honestly think this was one of our best purchases. The dogs can then be taken for walks much more easily.
