Yes, there is a hard top on which the cat can jump. It has a lot of sturdiness to it. The cubby's sides are made of cloth rather than hard material. This scratch tree is a favorite of our cat, and it's a good size for him. Aside from that, the cost is reasonable.

I decided to upgrade to this because she likes to sit on the window seal and it's very nice. It doesn't take up a lot of room, it's a good height so she can see out the window, and it's sturdy and stable enough that I don't even need to screw it into the wall to keep it from falling when she uses the scratching post part. She doesn't use any of the levels, but I put her up on the top every now and then to try and get her to She does, however, prefer the bottom cubby hole, and I keep some of her toys in the side hammock. The only issue I had with assembly was the cubby thing; it would have been easier with two people, but it was difficult to get the poles in the right place without the thing collapsing until you got two people in for support, but once I got that part done, the rest was a breeze. Overall, it's a lot better and more stimulating than a regular scratching post, and hopefully she'll be able to jump up on top on her own before long.
It's built to last. It wasn't too difficult to put together. It's a lot smaller than it appears in the picture. My son's crib is the same height as this one.
It is very popular with my cat. Assembly, on the other hand, is a pain in the neck. Regardless, it took me only 30 minutes to complete. A word of advice: screw the back part of the little house thing on first, because it'll be difficult to find the second hole (or you'll get stuck with fabric), and the back one is far more important than the front for the rest of the assembly.
Our three cats love it, especially our Maine coon (who stands 3 feet tall) who likes the top (though he wasn't cooperative for a photo) because it's very sturdy with his weight. The cats have never been in the same area without fighting before, and they appear to enjoy it. It only took them a few minutes to get used to it, which was not the case with other cat towers/condos. I would highly recommend this for your cat; they will enjoy it.
